About being ghosted

April 26, 2024 Melanie Hawken

by Teboho Seretlo

What does the term “ghosting” even mean? I looked it up on Google and this is what comes up: “Ghosting is when someone who used to be friendly or even romantic with you suddenly cuts off all communication without explanation. However, I daresay it happens across the spectrum, professionally too.

Cautionary Tales from the Front Line

April 21, 2024 Melanie Hawken

by Lionesses of Africa Operations Department

There have been many times over the past few years when we have looked at a country’s foreign exchange rate, have watched in horror as it has collapsed, had sleepless nights over the inflation that is sure to come given the needs of the country for US$ based imports (or is already building due to the mismatch between the ‘official’ rate and the parallel black market rate), and wondered how our Lionesses in that country will survive the long nights ahead.

There is no Virtue in Over-functioning: Ask for Help

by Safiyyah Boolay-Jappie

Something I am stepping into more and more is Deservingness. My Deservingness muscle is still ridiculously underdeveloped. A Skills-Focused Workplace Model, The Future of Work

April 21, 2024 Melanie Hawken

by Jenny Reid

A “job” is defined as “a piece of work, especially a specific task done as part of the routine of one's occupation or for an agreed price”. A “skill” is defined “as the ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc.” Work has traditionally been focused on jobs, completing the tasks required to fulfil a certain job description. However, Deloitte, suggests instead of looking at work as a series of jobs, we should be focused more on the set of skills held by employees and how those benefit the company as a whole.

Thinking Bigger: A Pitch-Deck Formula for Women Who Want to Change the World by Sarah Dusek

April 14, 2024 Melanie Hawken

Book Review

In her new book, Thinking Bigger: A Pitch-Deck Formula for Women Who Want to Change the World, serial entrepreneur and investor, Sarah Dusek, tackles head-on a key challenge for women business and brand builders. The lack of female representation among top-earning business founders is surprising when compared with the number of women who start businesses. Fewer than thirty women in history have taken companies they founded public on leading stock exchanges. Although consistent references to “women and small business” dominate global development strategies and influence public policy, women are granted less than 2 percent of all venture capital investments annually. Things need to change!
