What inspired you to start your company?

By profession I am a teacher, and I have a degree in environmental studies. Then I thought, why don't I do this to really be an example they can follow?

“I would like to introduce a product under my brand, in the area of waste-to-energy. This would allow me to process the waste locally.”

What makes your company, service, or product special?

Personalization—each client is unique, with their own specific needs. And sustainability.

E sustentabilida.

Tell us a little about your team.

The team comprises four employees—two women, two men—trained in environmental studies, agronomy, and includes a young community member. One handles company management, another manages the purchase and sale of waste, and two are responsible for consulting. When needed, we hire seasonal workers, often young people who have been providing small services within the community.

Share a bit about your entrepreneurial journey. Do you have any history of entrepreneurial activity?

After establishing the company in 2020, I attempted my first sale in 2021, which happened by chance. I faced problems with the vehicle I used to transport the waste for sale. All the money I earned went into repairing the vehicle. I eventually gave up on the business. However, I then turned this experience into a learning opportunity. I learned from the process and realised I needed to diversify my services because I recognised that, at that moment, that service required inputs I couldn't obtain with just one line of business.

Desisti do negócio.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

I would like to introduce a product under my brand, in the area of waste-to-energy. This would allow me to process the waste locally.

What gives you the most satisfaction as an entrepreneur?

Being able to deliver a quality service, and being able to contribute something to the well-being of the environment.

What's the best piece of advice you can give to other women who are thinking about starting a business?

Start where you are, and have the courage to begin.

Why LoA loves it…

The challenges of combatting the impact of climate change require everyone to become more environmentally conscious. It also requires the creation of specialist green businesses to find solutions to key environmental challenges, such as sustainable waste management. Júlia Silota is doing just that with her specialist business, harnessing her skills and knowledge in environmental studies to create a waste management and consulting business that is making a real impact in the community. — Melanie Hawken, founder & ceo, Lionesses of Africa
