LoA was fascinated to learn more about this unique business from founder Gillian Holl, which is both sustainability-focused and deeply committed to creating human-centred architecture tailored to the individual needs of clients and the environment.
When did your start your business?
I started in business twenty-one years ago, as a sole practitioner, and today the business has grown and created jobs for 5 people.

What does your company do?
We specialise in residential and hospitality developments, including lodges and conservation-focused projects that align deeply with our team’s values of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
What inspired you to start your company?
The practice was founded on a passion for designing architecture that is environmentally conscious and human-centred. Over time, this vision evolved into VELD. A culture of mentorship where young architects are guided in design thinking, detailing, leadership, and creating architecture that is purposeful and impactful.
What makes your business, service or product special?
We are currently exploring how to integrate sensory intelligence and neuro-design into our built environments. By collaborating with occupational therapists and specialised interior designers, we tailor each space to the specific needs of its users. Our approach is highly innovative, constantly seeking new ways to enhance our design processes and outcomes.
Tell us a little about your team
Our team consists of young, dynamic architectural professionals who each bring unique skills and perspectives. They share common values — environmental sensitivity, human-centred design, and an exceptional attention to detail. The team collaborates closely, learning from one another, and always places clients’ needs at the heart of every design decision.
Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?
Entrepreneurship demands adaptability, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose. The journey has required courage, creativity, and faith — it’s been unpredictable and challenging, yet deeply rewarding.
What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?
We envision establishing satellite offices where young architects can be mentored through our values — creating architecture that responds to context, celebrates human connection, and challenges convention. Our goal is to continue shaping environments that are intentional, grounded, and transformative.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?
Be tenacious, adaptable, and deeply rooted in your values. Lead with intention, stay grounded in your vision, and create spaces — both physical and professional — that reflect purpose and authenticity.
