LoA spoke to the innovation and impact-focused founder, Claudia Machaieie, about her vision, mission and hopes for the future of her green business.

When did you launch your company?

The company idea was initially developed in 2023, and today it employs 4 people.

What does your company do?

Sea Glasses is an organization dedicated to manufacturing sustainable eyewear, among other products, using biodegradable raw materials from a 3D printer. However, we are working to incorporate the use of recycled plastic as the main raw material for our products. Sea Glasses operates in a circular economy where its product line can be returned for the production of new products.

What inspired you to start your company?

What inspired me to create Sea Glasses was the reality of the cleanups I've been organizing with my team at the Sustainable Ocean Alliance Mozambique (which I founded in 2020 and which works with volunteers for ocean sustainability). Furthermore, I come from a family with a history of myopia, and my younger sister started wearing glasses very early on. She spent some time having vision difficulties, and I couldn't afford to buy her a pair of glasses. In an attempt to solve these two problems—marine plastic pollution and the lack of access to prescription glasses—the idea arose to create a sustainable and accessible eyewear brand, allowing people to acquire glasses whenever necessary. It was recognized in a green ideas competition as the 2nd best green idea in Mozambique, representing the country at the African regional level—Climatelaunchpad—and as the 1st best innovative project by Capacita Moz - Total Energies.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. Do you have any history of entrepreneurial activity?

My professional career began at age 14 as a social activist. However, my activities in companies were mostly in private organizations (SEPPA & Centro Terra Viva) and internationally - United Nations in the World Food Programme in environmental and social projects where I had the opportunity to collaborate in the administration and management of programs at the national level. Currently, I work as Responsibility Coordinator at TOPACK, focused on the creation and implementation of socio-environmental projects.

“My plans are to revolutionize the eyewear production area and bring the Sea Glasses brand to be recognized for its sustainable and accessible products.”

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

My plans are to revolutionize the eyewear production area and bring the Sea Glasses brand to be recognized for its sustainable and accessible products. In this regard, we are working on a new prototype of sunglasses - solarlight glasses, which will allow the user to wear sunglasses during the day and turn on a lamp at night. I hope that our products will reach all provinces in Mozambique and eventually be exported to countries and continents around the world.

What gives you the most satisfaction as an entrepreneur?

What's the best piece of advice you can give to other women who are thinking about starting a business?
