The impact of bias in women’s lives

October 23, 2022 Melanie Hawken

by Lionesses of Africa Operations Department

“The pen has been in their hands…” - Jane Austen.

We have recently been drawn to the brilliant book by the award-winning author, Caroline Criado Perez, entitled INVISIBLE WOMEN: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’, ‘IW’ (here). We assumed it would contain many of the statistics we have seen in the world of finance (such as only 2% of VC funding going to US Start ups in 2021 and 82% to all-male founding teams here and not much better in Africa where there is a far greater ratio of women entrepreneurs to male). Therefore, we were pleasantly surprised to note that this book deals very much with the mundane, our day-to-day lives and how bias, indeed any bias (unconscious or otherwise), makes a huge difference in the long run (as any Casino knows too well). However, as we shall show through her investigations and other studies, this is far from mundane, instead deadly serious and is something we all must take very seriously indeed for our businesses and most importantly, our employees.

If you live in a world where you don’t need ramps, you simply do not notice

November 20, 2021 Melanie Hawken

by Lionesses of Africa Operations Department

The above powerful photo of Sázia Sousa, in her words “a proud member of Lionesses”, the General Director of Technoplus, Lda, Mozambique (here), taken by the brilliant Giulia Bosis, says it all for what we are, as she says:

“A note for the International Women Entrepreneur's Day:

Be a # woman and be a # entrepreneur! I have this photo as a symbol of much that I have achieved so far. And for all women I scream: We do not want to be equal to men. We do not want to stop taking care of the house or the children. We just want them to stop looking at women as a being incapable of opinion, intelligence, and strength. We want to stop conditioning our life to a successful marriage. We want to continue being women, but above all, we want to be human beings able to help our community.”

The Security Industry sector is becoming an increasingly critical source of jobs as the rate of unemployment among women increases. The unemployment rate among black African women stands at nearly 41% compared to 32% among men. These disparities are not only the product of a profoundly unbalanced economy, they also contribute to gender inequality in society.

Sadly we are not talking of the amazing FemiHandbags; Ruff ’n’ Tumble; House of Tara; Lilly Alfonso; SuzieBeauty and the many other thousands of incredible brands from Lionesses, the labels that just scream quality, trust and passion. Here we look at the labels and the generalizations that then attach themselves especially to women and attempt to drag us down.

What do Sexual Education, the Environment and Peace have in Common

July 30, 2021 Melanie Hawken
pablo-1614.png

by Filipa Carreira, Founder of Wamina

There is a strong correlation between gender inequality, climate vulnerability, and state fragility. Exponential population growth is leading to rapid resource depletion. The populational pressure on the planet exacerbates the risks related to global warming, deforestation, and decreasing biodiversity. The ability of women to exercise their rights to family planning, deciding whether to have children, how many and when, is intrinsically linked to the health of our planet. It is in the best interest of everyone, men, and women, from developed and developing countries, that sexual health and rights education and family planning reaches all communities, especially those more vulnerable to the direct impact of climate change and conflict.

Today, women comprise nearly half of the global workforce. The additional productive power of women entering the workforce from 1970 until today accounts for about 25% of current GDP. This makes women a strong force in the global economy, one that is growing as more women across the world enter the workforce in greater numbers, than ever before.

Women empowerment shouldn’t be a fad, a trend you embody because you feel you ought to; as a black woman charting her path to success I’m about to say what needs to be said - an unpopular opinion you didn’t request but which I will give to you anyway.

Empowerment Using the Principles of Appreciative Inquiry

May 8, 2020 Melanie Hawken

by Claire Holden, Empowerment Coach

I’m passionate about empowerment – “the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one's life and claiming one's rights.” This is the area of coaching that I focus on and where I do most of my ongoing learning. The challenge with empowerment is that we don’t often realise how much of our personal power we give away on a daily basis until we feel resentful, run down, fed up and / or confused and uncentered.
