LoA spoke to the passion-driven founder, Tania Kabeya, to learn more about her business, her love of cooking, and her vision for the future

Frozen Ready Meals that bring comfort and convenience without compromising on taste

“My journey with food began long before I wore a chef’s coat — it started in the warmth of my family kitchen, surrounded by the rich aromas and bold flavors of African cuisine.”

“I honour my African culinary traditions while presenting them in fresh, elegant, and creative ways. Every dish tells a story of heritage and innovation.”

What inspired you to start your company?

My journey with food began long before I wore a chef’s coat — it started in the warmth of my family kitchen, surrounded by the rich aromas and bold flavors of African cuisine. Cooking was more than a chore or a skill; it was a language of love, tradition, and creativity. As I grew older, that passion only deepened. I found joy in seeing how food could bring people together, celebrate special moments, and offer comfort on the hardest days. I wanted to create that same feeling for others — not just through taste, but through an entire experience.

That vision led me to culinary school at the International Hotel School, and eventually to working at the Hyatt, where I learned the art of presentation, service, and professionalism. But deep down, I knew I wanted something of my own — a brand that reflects who I am, where I come from, and the kind of impact I want to make through food. That’s how Chef La Tania was born — from heart, heritage, and the dream of serving food that nourishes, connects, and celebrates life.

What makes your business, service or product special?

Authenticity with a Modern Twist: I honour my African culinary traditions while presenting them in fresh, elegant, and creative ways. Every dish tells a story of heritage and innovation. Whether it’s a custom cake or a private dinner, I make every client feel seen and celebrated. My attention to detail and warmth create unforgettable moments.

Diverse Offerings, Same Excellence: From premium frozen meals to luxury event catering, my consistency in flavour, quality, and presentation across all services is rare and admirable.

Empowerment Through Food: The Chef La Tania brand is not just about feeding people — it’s about building community, celebrating culture, and inspiring others to live purposefully.

“We may be small in size, but we are big in heart. Our team works like family — and that’s exactly how we want our clients to feel when they experience Chef La Tania.”

Tell us a little about your team

At Chef La Tania, we believe great food starts with a great team. Behind every dish, every event, and every celebration we cater, there’s a small but passionate team working with dedication, skill, and love.

As a professionally trained chef with a background from the International Hotel School and experience at the Hyatt, the Chef La Tania team is made up of:
• Two full-time team members who are the heart of our daily operations — from prepping ingredients and managing orders to ensuring every dish meets our high standards.
• Two part-time team members who have been with us for over five years, showing incredible commitment and care during peak seasons, large events, and special projects.
• And of course, Chef Tania myself — overseeing the vision, quality, creativity, and customer experience that defines our brand.

We may be small in size, but we are big in heart. Our team works like family — and that’s exactly how we want our clients to feel when they experience Chef La Tania.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Entrepreneurship has always been in my blood. I come from an entrepreneurial family, especially my parents, who showed me from a young age what it means to build something with vision, faith, and hard work. Watching them create, lead, and navigate the ups and downs of business planted a seed in me that has grown over the years.

Starting Chef La Tania wasn’t just about launching a food business — it was about stepping into my purpose. I began with a passion for cooking and a deep desire to share my culture through food. What started in my kitchen slowly grew into something greater — a brand that reflects who I am and what I believe in

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

As an entrepreneur and a chef, my journey is still unfolding — and I’m more determined than ever to grow, evolve, and create lasting impact through food. My dream for Chef La Tania is to expand into a recognised lifestyle food brand, offering not only catering and private dining, but also I plan to expand into a full lifestyle brand with my own product line, a signature range of frozen ready meals accessible to busy households across the country. I envision having a central kitchen, a team of passionate professionals, and possibly a small boutique café or deli that reflects the heart of African and fusion cuisine.

I also want to continue sharing my story to inspire other women, especially those who have faced loss, setbacks, or doubt, to keep building their dreams no matter what life throws at them. I’m passionate about mentoring young women in business and using my journey to inspire others to build with purpose. Everything I do moving forward is about impact — creating more, serving better, and staying true to who I am.

As a chef, I plan to continue developing new recipes, traveling to explore global flavours, and maybe even publish a cookbook one day that reflects my journey — full of tradition, healing, and bold, beautiful food. This is just the beginning. I believe Chef La Tania has a powerful future — one that honours where I’ve come from and celebrates where I’m going.

“The Chef La Tania brand is not just about feeding people — it’s about building community, celebrating culture, and inspiring others to live purposefully.”

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

What brings me the most satisfaction as an entrepreneur is the ability to create something meaningful — from the ground up — and watch it touch people’s lives. There’s a deep sense of purpose in seeing a client smile after a meal, in knowing that something I created brought comfort, joy, or celebration to someone’s day.

I take pride in the fact that I’m building something with my own hands, something that reflects my story, my culture, and my resilience. The flexibility to make my own decisions, the challenges that push me to grow, and the relationships I’ve built along the way all make this journey worthwhile.

But more than anything, it’s the impact — on my team, on my clients, and on myself — that keeps me going. Every milestone reminds me that I’m not just running a business; I’m living my purpose.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Build with purpose, not just pressure. Don’t rush to fit into someone else’s timeline or definition of success. Trust the process, stay rooted in your “why,” and let faith guide your steps. Run your race.

There will be challenges — moments when it feels overwhelming or uncertain — but that’s where your strength is built. Stay true to who you are, surround yourself with people who believe in you, and don’t be afraid to start small. Every big dream starts with one brave step. Start with what you have.
