DATHONGA, a sustainable design business merging traditional techniques with contemporary artistic sensibilities in Mozambique

Márcia Nangy O’Connell, or Marcita as she is affectionately known, is the founder and artistic director of Dathonga Designs in Mozambique. Since 2010, she has established herself in the world of Mozambican design. Dathonga has participated in national and international fairs, showcasing the beauty of Mozambican crafts to audiences in South Africa, USA, Denmark, Spain, Germany and, recently, at South African Fashion Week. Márcia’s commitment goes beyond her own brand. In 2010, she created Galeria Dathonga in Inhambane, providing a platform for other Mozambican and African artists to showcase their work.


Márcia is the youngest daughter of a mechanical engineer (Aly Thuwa) and an award-winning artist, chef and fashion designer (Anina Taibo). She inherited a natural inclination towards invention and helping others from her parents, as they were very generous. Following in her mother's artistic footsteps, she felt drawn to creating unique pieces using available natural materials. In 2003, after returning to her hometown of Praia do Tofo, Márcia faced limited job prospects. However, her spirit remained undeterred, and she began creating exquisite fibre products, laying the foundation for what would become Dathonga Designs. Using raw materials from palm fibres and wood, Dathonga products are sustainably handcrafted.

Márcia is inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the Thonga people. Her collections, “Sipatsi” and “Xirrundzu”, reimagine traditional techniques with contemporary design sensibilities. These collections celebrate the vibrant mosaic of Mozambican crafts and its deeply rooted traditions.

Her dedication goes beyond creating beautiful objects. Márcia was an active volunteer in the Cabo Delgado refugee camps, training more than 117 artisans in product development. She also works with African Parks and GIZ, sharing her experience with artisans from Parque do Bazaruto, Inhassoro and Guvuro. Márcia saw that traditional techniques were disappearing from everyday life, which sparked the desire to keep them alive. She has been trying to replicate the past, but reimagining these techniques with a contemporary design aesthetic. Márcia has created 67 jobs through her business.

Sou a filha mais nova de um engenheiro mecânico (Aly Thuwa) e de uma premiada artista, chef e estilista de moda (Anina Taibo). Herdei de meus pais uma inclinação natural para a invenção e para ajudar os outros, pois eles eram muito generosos.

Seguindo os passos artísticos da minha mãe, senti-me atraída pela criação de peças únicas utilizando materiais naturais disponíveis. Em 2003, depois de regressar à minha cidade natal, a Praia do Tofo, enfrentei perspectivas de emprego limitadas. No entanto, meu espírito permaneceu implacável. Comecei a criar produtos de fibra requintados, lançando as bases para o que se tornaria a Dathonga Designs. Utilizando matérias-primas sustentáveis ​​provenientes de fibras de palmeira e madeiras, os produtos Dathonga são feitos à mão de forma sustentável.

Como Director Artístico da Dathonga Designs, estabeleci-me no mundo do design moçambicano. Inspiro-me na rica herança cultural do povo Thonga. Minhas coleções, “Sipatsi” e “Xirrundzu”, reimaginam técnicas tradicionais com sensibilidades de design contemporâneo. Estas colecções celebram o vibrante mosaico do artesanato moçambicano e as suas tradições profundamente enraizadas.

Minha dedicação vai além da criação de belos objetos. Fui voluntário activo nos campos de refugiados de Cabo Delgado, formando mais de 117 artesãos no desenvolvimento de produtos. Também trabalho com a African Parks e a GIZ, partilhando a minha experiência com artesãos do Parque do Bazaruto, Inhassoro e Guvuro.

Lioness Weekender spoke to the inspirational Márcia Nangy O’Connell about her entrepreneurial journey and her passion for showcasing Mozambique’s artisan craftsmanship to the world.

What inspired you to start your company?

I saw that traditional techniques were disappearing from everyday life, which sparked the desire to keep them alive. I have been trying to replicate the past, but reimagining these techniques with a contemporary design aesthetic.

Cultural Preservation: Dathonga keeps traditional Thonga techniques alive by incorporating them into contemporary designs. This is important because it helps ensure that these cultural touchstones are not lost.

Unique Design Aesthetic: By combining tradition with modern sensibilities, Dathonga creates a unique design aesthetic that stands out. This can attract a wider audience, both those interested in Thonga culture and those who appreciate innovative design.

The Dathonga team is made up of:

Tailors and Shoemakers: These specialists add another dimension to Dathonga creations with their expertise in fabric and leather finishes. Their craftsmanship ensures that the final product is not only beautiful, but also durable and functional.

Designers: Working alongside artisans, designers would bring a contemporary eye to reinterpret these techniques and create pieces that resonate with modern tastes.

Me (the founder/artistic director): As the driving force behind Dathonga, your vision and cultural connection are what keep the project moving forward.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

After realizing that traditional Thonga techniques were disappearing, I was inspired to create Dathonga as a business to preserve this cultural heritage.

I organized myself and looked for qualified artisans with in-depth knowledge of traditional techniques. I registered at all design schools to better understand design and reinterpret these techniques for a modern audience. It looked for tailors and Moroccans to bring expertise in finishing the products.

I worked with the team to develop a product line that incorporates traditional techniques into contemporary designs. This involved experimentation and refinement to find the right balance between cultural authenticity and modern appeal.

Dathonga launches our first traditional-based products, starting with a small collection of accessories and local sales. As Dathonga gains recognition, we expand our product range, reach new markets or participate in cultural events such as Decorex and South African Design Week.

Organizei-me e procurei artesãos qualificados e com um profundo conhecimento das técnicas tradicionais. Registei-me em todas as escolas de design para poder compreender melhor o design e reinterpretar estas técnicas para um público moderno. procurou alfaiates e marroquinos para trazer expertise no acabamento dos produtos.

Trabalhei com a equipa para desenvolver uma linha de produtos que incorpora técnicas tradicionais em designs contemporâneos. Isto envolveu experimentação e refinamento para encontrar o equilíbrio certo entre autenticidade cultural e apelo moderno.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

The future of Dathonga is bright! Our goal is to share the beauty and heritage of our culture with the world by selling our products internationally. This expansion will allow us to:

Empowering Women: We plan to train more women in traditional techniques, promoting cultural preservation and creating sustainable livelihoods in the community.

Make a difference: By creating new opportunities and promoting our culture on a global scale, Dathonga aims to make a positive impact on the community.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Seeing the positive impact that Dathonga has on the lives of women like Assucena is what brings me the most satisfaction. Assucena's move from a thatched hut to a brick house demonstrates to me the tangible difference Dathonga can make.

By tapping into your unique strengths, culture and passions, you'll create a business that not only thrives, but also reflects who you really are.
