LIONESS WEEKENDER COVER STORY

A tech-enabled integrated marketing communications company headquartered in South Africa with branches in Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda

Seanice Lojede is the founder of BLU Flamingo Africa, a pan-African tech-enabled integrated marketing communications company founded in 2010 and headquartered in South Africa, with branches in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. The business has a workforce of 55 people. With a master’s degree in digital marketing, and as an alumna of the prestigious Stanford Seed program, Seanice is a tech-savvy marketing leader whose data-driven strategies and cutting-edge marketing technologies have helped global companies crack the Sub-Saharan African market.

Born Seanice Kacungira in Uganda, today Seanice Lojede is a trailblazer whose accomplishments span the realms of journalism, broadcasting, and entrepreneurship. Her recent accolade as the South African Woman of Stature Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 is a testament to her multifaceted talents and her unwavering drive to succeed. Seanice's career began in the world of media, where she made her mark as a respected journalist and radio personality. She honed her skills at prominent media outlets in Kenya and Uganda, including Capital FM, Sanyu FM, WBS, and NTV. However, Seanice's ambitions extended beyond the boundaries of traditional media. In collaboration with her younger sister, Nancy Kacungira, she co-founded Blu Flamingo, a pioneering digital media management company that has revolutionized the way content is created and distributed in the digital age.

Blu Flamingo's innovative approach and Seanice's entrepreneurial acumen quickly propelled the company to the forefront of the industry. Her visionary leadership and commitment to empowering others through digital media have not gone unnoticed, earning her recognition as one of Africa's Most Influential Women in Business and Government.

Lioness Weekender spoke to the power-house marketing communications leader about her entrepreneurial journey to date, and also her ambitions for the future.

What does your company do?

BLU Flamingo Africa is a pan-African tech-enabled integrated marketing communications company headquartered in South Africa, with branches in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. We solve marketing problems for businesses and companies across Africa using technology and strategy.

What inspired you to start your company?

I possess an insatiable curiosity about the world and a relentless desire to create and innovate. This innate inquisitiveness, coupled with a refusal to accept the status quo, inspired me to launch BLU Flamingo as an outlet to explore new possibilities at the intersection of technology, marketing, and entrepreneurship.

My Passion for Digital Transformation
My pursuit of a master's degree in digital marketing and focus on acquiring cutting-edge skills like product management point to my passion for digital transformation. Identifying opportunities in leveraging emerging technologies and data-driven strategies to improve traditional marketing approaches are a key driving force behind BLU Flamingo's conception.

Also - Representation and Empowerment
As a woman of African descent, BLU Flamingo is a platform to challenge underrepresentation in tech and marketing spheres. I love empowering other women, minorities, and youth through initiatives like digital skills training and have a desire to create more inclusive and equitable opportunities.

Ultimately, my inspirations emanate from a powerful amalgamation of curiosity, tangential thinking, representational zeal, and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence fueled by a vision to create meaningful, lasting change through entrepreneurship.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Several things:
A Pioneering and Innovative Spirit
From its inception, BLU Flamingo has been driven by a pioneering, innovative spirit that defies conventional industry norms and pushes boundaries. The company's evolution from a creative agency into a cutting-edge, tech-enabled integrated marketing powerhouse demonstrates its boldness in embracing emerging technologies, data-driven strategies, and disruptive business models like the online freelancer marketplace.

Multidisciplinary and Integrated Approach
BLU Flamingo stands out by taking a holistic, integrated approach that seamlessly blends strategy, creativity, data science, and scalable marketing technology stacks. This multidisciplinary prowess allows us to provide comprehensive, future-proof solutions tailored to each client's unique needs, going beyond just executing marketing campaigns.

Entrepreneurial and Intrapreneurial Culture
What makes BLU Flamingo truly exceptional is its entrepreneurial ethos that permeates every aspect of the company. From Seanice's founding vision to nurture an intrapreneurial culture where every team member is empowered to think boldly, challenge norms, and constantly innovate, the company actively cultivates a mindset of disruption from within.

Social Impact and Empowerment
Beyond our commercial success, we have built a deep commitment to creating positive social impact and empowering underrepresented communities. Through initiatives like digital skills training, youth entrepreneurship programs, and platforms that amplify diverse voices, the company leverages its resources and influence to drive sustainable transformation.

Pan-African Footprint and Growth
With a presence across multiple African countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, BLU Flamingo has established itself as a true pan-African force.

Embodiment of Founder's Innovative Spirit
Perhaps the most special aspect of BLU Flamingo is how it embodies the indomitable spirit, entrepreneurial grit, and relentless pursuit of excellence that define Seanice. The company is a living manifestation of her vision, values, and determination to leverage business as a catalyst for innovation, empowerment, and positive change.

In essence, BLU Flamingo Africa's pioneering mindset, integrated capabilities, socially conscious ethos, pan-African ambitions, and the embodiment of its founder's trailblazing spirit coalesce to make it a truly remarkable and special enterprise.

Tell us a little about your team:

My team are very solid; I have been most fortunate to find them. Many of them have been with the company from its inception and are now part owners of the business.

We embrace Continuous learning and we run a book club and podcast that meets virtually across the different markets every Wednesday - this helps us stay sharp and is just one of many initiatives to do so.

We have a platform-agnostic, multidisciplinary team across the areas of strategy, marketing, technology and branding and we hold each other accountable for our Values which are in our name BLU

The B stands for Benefit, meaning we are one and connected, inclusive & nondiscriminatory. We exist to benefit not just us and our clients but our communities, celebrating diversity and ensuring we do no harm.

The L stands for Leadership and the Acceptance of the discomfort necessary for transformation. We don't compete to be better than others, we compete to be better than who we were yesterday, embracing creative self-destruction to evolve and improve.

U stands for Utility; Envisioning to create new models of living and working that render our current challenges obsolete. To not settle for the status quo, constantly thinking of what is next.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Entrepreneurship courses through my veins - my father is an incredibly enterprising individual, and I suspect his indomitable spirit has become ingrained in my DNA! My entrepreneurial journey began at the tender age of 8, selling guavas from our neighbors' trees, and I never looked back. Throughout my formative years, I embraced various entrepreneurial pursuits, from teaching dance to kids as a teenager to running a t-shirt business.

However, I've always been obsessed with excellence, process optimization, and scalability. I possess an insatiable desire to build and challenge the status quo. As a result, I made a strategic decision early in my career to work for an established company, enabling me to gain invaluable insights into the inner workings of a well-oiled business machine. This experience proved invaluable, as I diligently absorbed knowledge like a sponge, meticulously observing and learning from seasoned professionals.

This thirst for knowledge and continuous improvement paved the way for me to secure a seat on my first board of directors at the tender age of 25. My pursuit of excellence, coupled with the entrepreneurial spirit instilled by my father, has propelled me to opportunities that have been uncommon- working in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

At age 26 I decided to set up BLU Flamingo and leave formal employment, I was scared but I think it worked out just fine!

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

I hope that it can outlive me and continue in the hands of the team that are steering it now!

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Fostering an Intrapreneurial Ecosystem

Within the BLU Flamingo Africa team, I take immense pride in cultivating an ecosystem that nurtures and empowers intrapreneurs. These are former employees who have transformed their entrepreneurial aspirations into thriving businesses operating within our broader organizational umbrella. Witnessing their growth trajectories and ambitious visions come to fruition fills me with a profound sense of fulfillment, validating the countless sleepless nights and dedication poured into this business.

By providing a nurturing environment that encourages intrapreneurial spirit, we have created a cycle of innovation and opportunity. These intrapreneurial ventures not only contribute to the company's overall success but also serve as beacons of inspiration, demonstrating that with the right support and mindset, even the most audacious dreams can be realized.

It's all about, pushing boundaries, and redefining what's possible – all while being part of the BLU Flamingo Africa family.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

My advice to future businesswomen would be:

Let curiosity and passion be your guiding force, not conventions.

Continually invest in learning and skill acquisition to stay ahead of the curve.

View challenges as opportunities and embrace an innovative, solutions-oriented mindset.

Build a culture that celebrates bold thinking and intrapreneurship.

Ground your ambitions in purpose - leverage business as a force for positive transformation.

If I can build a multifaceted, award-winning tech and marketing firm rooted in innovation and social impact, any woman armed with vision and tenacity can follow a similarly inspiring path.
