An exciting new silent podcast series for South Africa’s deaf community has just been launched by Yellow Owl in South Africa, the company founded by Thuli Zikalala, and a recent Silver Award Winner at the New Gen Digital Awards. The series, which premiered on 18 November 2021 is called 'Signs & Stories: the silent podcast' and it’s a visual podcast using South African Sign Language (SASL). This 10-episode podcast series captures the stories, experiences, culture and shared values within South Africa’s Deaf community.
In the new Signs & Stories series, Deaf presenters Lerato Maake ka Mncube and Daline 'Crazy D' Maasdorp engage with guests, both Deaf & hearing, from different backgrounds to shape a new narrative about the Deaf community. The name is a word play that invites audiences into the silent world seen through the eyes of Deaf people. Taking a spin on the audio nature of podcasts - Yellow Owl’s new series is visual: the hands become a voice. Podcast viewers can expect intimate, informative, inspirational and entertaining conversations shared by influential people within the Deaf community.
The first episode - A Health Hero - features John Meletse, a prominent Deaf LGBTQI activist. He has been living with HIV for the past 19 years. His colourful personality will leave audiences entertained, educated and challenged to view the Deaf community in a different way.
