Renegamos o nosso lado Sombra

Carl Jung define bem o nosso lado sombra:

Aposte no Auto-Conhecimento!

Have you discovered what you have come to do in this world?

by Nereyda Ah Hoy, writer, author and founder of Indika platform and digital magazine

In these times of intense transformation, not only around us, but above all at the level of our inner world, the fact that we often feel lost, disoriented and unmotivated is a sign that we must change. The way we are going is the way we should be following. It's pointless to run and want to be perfect when, inside, we die a little, every day.

There are living people who have to all intents and purposes “died a little inside" long ago. Often we want to be what we are not and play a role that does not fit us. And we do not want to do the most essential of all: look inside and get to really know ourselves. According to Shelley Prevost, Lamp Post Group psychologist and therapist, there are 5 essential reasons that prevent us from following our purpose in life, which I share below:

1. Our focus of life is always projected abroad

The Human Being, from the time he is born, is taught to seek outside of himself, everything he thinks he needs to guide himself, guide and satisfy in life, at all levels. When it comes to finding our purpose for Life, we always get the approval of others (family, friends, etc.) as a validation that we are on the right path. However, over and over, we forget that others, however well-intentioned they are, give us their opinion according to what constitutes their own personal perspective of things, which may not serve us, as well as it serves them. That is why it is so dangerous to leave our decisions in the hands of others and let others decide which path to follow in life. Asking for advice, that's one thing! Wanting others to decide for us, is another completely different matter. We always have to keep in mind that our opinion is and should always be the last one that counts, after analyzing everything we think we have to analyze.

2. We refuse to hear our call

With regard to "Living Our Purpose in Life," not listening to our calling can be one of the worst consequences. From a very early age, our parents and family want to decide for us what the best career is, what the best job is, and what the best lifestyle is that we should lead. Of course their intention is, in most cases, well meaning, but we must develop the ability to individually assess whether that advice makes sense to us, even if it comes from loved ones. When I started my university life, I "opted" initially to take the Law Course, because I always heard from my father that “Law is a good course because lawyers are well received and well positioned in society.” The truth is that, in the first year, I began to feel such an inner anguish and to feel that it was not what I definitely wanted to do. Going to university became a martyrdom, and I began to isolate myself more and more from my colleagues and conversations. When I returned home, all I wanted to do was forget the day and "turn it off!” After two and a half years of trying to "fit" into a world that was not my own, I decided to give up the course (even though I knew it would disappoint my father) and decided to listen to my inner calling and go into a career space which I totally identified with. I successfully completed my course and I have been making my contribution to the world through what I have learned ever since, and I am immensely grateful for it! One of the best ways to know what our passion is, even at a professional level, is to ask ourselves: "What if money was not my biggest concern? What would you choose to do?“ The answer that comes to your mind and makes you excited inside, is the path you should try to follow.

3. We do not enjoy our own company

I know many people who think the idea of being alone is completely alarming! And they justify themselves in various ways, saying that being alone is harrowing, they feel no need to spend time alone, and do not realize why it is even necessary. What I try to explain to people, often without success, is that when we are with ourselves, we are not alone. We are with the most important person in our lives: ourselves! And that, sometimes, it is necessary to be with ourselves alone, to listen to us, to feel us, because only then can we understand the reason for many things that happen to us and the way we feel at times.

If we are constantly in adrenaline mode, surrounded by people, noise and agitation, our soul is also restless and cannot find a balance. And although the adrenaline state is addictive, in the long run, it wears us down to unimaginable levels. Usually people who are most in need of being surrounded by people are those who have more tendencies to go into depression and to feel disoriented in life. Their focus is always on the outside, on others, and they never try to find the balance where it actually is: on the inside. If we are to investigate the lives of the greatest entrepreneurs in the world, we will see that most of them spend much time alone, reflecting, meditating, or simply enjoying their own company.

4. We Renegade Our Shadow Side

One of the most difficult things for all of us (without exception!) is accepting and learning to live with that side of ours that is not so pleasant and that we often preferred did not exist - our Shadow Side! The work of knowing, accepting and living with our Shadow is usually a consequence of self-knowledge, of deep work on oneself, whether through therapy, meditation, or other type of practice. However, our Shadow Side is as valuable as our Light Side! The greatest lessons for us to evolve and surpass ourselves are given exactly by our Shadow Side. Our Light side is much more pleasant and much easier to bear, but little challenges us and we cannot grow with it very often, as a result it is dangerous because it gives us a wrong idea of what we are, as a whole! The beauty of the Human Being is exactly having good and less good things and our challenge should always be to reinforce good things and learn from the less good things.

The philosopher, Carl Jung, well defines our shadow side. He says:

"The shadow is the side of your personality that you do not want others to see. It represents their shortcomings, their failures, their selfish motives. Most of us avoid this before anyone can see. But there is one thing: the part of you that is the darkest has the most things to teach you about your purpose. If you discover that your purpose is really about self-awareness, your darkness shows you where you most need to grow and mature. Most importantly, it shows who you need to learn the most. It's the people you least like that you have more to learn about yourself. But most ignore the dark side. Instead, look for comfortable relationships that reinforce worn-out, obsolete images of Self. "

5. We ignore our most intuitive side

According to Psychology, our Unconscious represents things that many of us run away from, all of life - emotions, intuition, impulses, and sensitivity. One of the great inner struggles of the Human Being has to do with the need to have control over everything around you (or most things) and to be fully aware of all your steps and not to suffer from weaknesses or obstacles.

But life is not a straight line and we will never have control over everything, just ourselves and even in that respect we have to work hard and get to know ourselves deeply! It's a lifelong process, but it's worth it! Bet on Self-Knowledge! Overcome your fears and become the best version of yourself!
