Winds of opportunity. Keeping a birds-eye view on your finances.

by Eldari Visser, founder of PicketFence Life

Having a bird’s eye view brings to mind a very common concept. It shows you with one overall look at what you need to know about any situation. We use this in corporate situations and in our own lives. Most entrepreneurs have to take a couple of steps back from their work to take a good look at what they have created, what they are busy with, or their action plans towards reaching their goals. Access the progress and problems.

If we look at nature’s perspective of flying high we come to realize many more uses for flying higher and higher. I love to sit for hours and watch big birds circling high above. With their phenomenal eyesight, they spot opportunities of food miles away.

They spot the enemy coming into their territory, they spot dangers lurking for their chicks placed on high rocks. But to soar high above the mountains with the wind in your feathers brings a massive feeling of freedom. Have you ever watched seagulls playing on the wind? Such fun!

Imagine for a moment that feeling of freedom. How exhilarating that must feel! I am sure invincibility comes with that. By choice, most of us would rather be the raptor, like an eagle, rather than the smaller birds. The smaller you are the easier it is to be spotted as prey.

Let’s bring this back to financial literacy.

In our personal financial life, it is very valuable to take a step back and take a good look at our finances. Are you the raptor or becoming the prey? Are you soaring or struggling against the wind? Have you spotted new opportunities yet?

A couple of questions to consider:

  • Can you see any current problems?
  • Can you see possible hiccups that will rear their head soon?
  • Have you made provisions for the storm that might be brought on by the wind?.
  • Are you protecting the chicks?
  • Are you dodging the enemy and looking after yourself? After all, you are your best asset. Without you nobody gets food.

On the more positive side?

Are you scanning the environment for new opportunities for change, a new deal or a new collaboration?

How about new ventures into other areas that you never thought possible?

The biggest reason why it is amazing to use the “birds-eye view” system is to create freedom. The sooner you reach your financial goal, get out of sticky debt situations, get away from raptors called creditors, and move to higher places with the wind beneath your wings - the sooner the total freedom comes of living the good life. Then you can just enjoy the wind in your hair and reach your highest mountain.

Take that jump today out of the nest and fly!
