Motivation: real or rubbish? Learn some tricks to mobilize your motivation

August 14, 2022 Melanie Hawken

by Marjon Meyer

Did you leap out of bed this morning? It’s cold… it’s winter, Covid-restrictions limit our movements and business operations, and we’ve learnt to no longer look too far ahead. So, do you even set any goals during these crazy times? If yes, what fuels your progress? This year’s lockdown restrictions and lifestyle is a lot easier for me than last year. I like the “new normal”. Working from home, doing more online shopping to avoid busy malls (buying things we don’t need) and appreciating my own lovely home is a blessing. I’ve learnt to focus on close relationships and live more intentionally. Learnt to not sweat the small stuff.

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.”

- Anatole France

The fuel tank of inspiration and motivation is often directly proportional to the month of the year. In January and February, it’s pretty full because we have a clean slate and a renewed sense of energy. Fast forward a few months and the levels tend to go up and down depending on the season and what is going on for you. Don’t leave your internal fuel tank up to the mercy of external factors. How can you keep a steady gauge despite what the year holds for you?

Over 92% of New Year’s Resolutions fail within 6 weeks, don’t become a statistic

There’s a reason why most fitness and health goals turn into pure and utter nothingness in a matter of a few weeks, especially this time of year. Sure, change is hard, but it’s also not acceptable to pigeon hole your goals before they even start with magical quick fix mindsets that leave you worse off than ever before.

We live in an information economy, where you can find virtually anything you want, somewhere on the internet. Want to learn how to bake a cake? There’s a recipe website for that. Want to learn how to change the battery in your computer? There’s a YouTube video for that. Want to learn how to meditate? There’s an app for that.

Always stay focused and motivated…

“You will find many barriers along the way, but as long as you push through, you will always be one step closer to your goals and dreams. I'm not telling you it's going to be easy, I'm telling you it's going to be worth it. Never lose hope and faith in yourself and your passion.”

- Daisy Mogne is the founder of Studio Daisy Mogne in Mozambique, a company that offers professional Make-up and Hair Styling, providing clients with the best service and experience possible. Starting her business was a way for Daisy to do what she is passionate about, and also a way to bring other girls on board into the business to demonstrate their creative side and skills as well. Her ultimate goal is to establish a technical beauty school in Mozambique where she can share all her knowledge and inspire other people.

Entrepreneur Advice from Claire Keet: Be clear about your motivation for starting up

August 18, 2016 Melanie Hawken
Claire Keet, founder of Sentiens (South Africa)

Claire Keet, founder of Sentiens (South Africa)

Be clear about your motivation for starting up....

"Interrogate your motivation for starting a business. And be honest with yourself. That motivation is what you'll rely on to get you out of bed when it feels like your business is failing. It will be what helps you remain strong when you're learning the really tough lessons, of which there will be plenty. It will inspire you to find solutions for challenges that seem unconquerable. Write down your motivation and make sure it's real enough not to waver in the face of the fear, hard work, stress and challenges that you will face."

- Claire Keet is a multi-faceted entrepreneur and the founder of Sentiens in South Africa, a company that works with local designers to create a range of beautiful, functional yoga and fitness gear. Claire's focus is on printed yoga and active mats, which combine gorgeous aesthetics with great performance. She studied a Bachelor of Journalism specialising in English Literature and Communication Design at Rhodes University before the call to explore sent her packing to Asia where she travelled extensively and made a life for herself in South Korea for several years. She returned to South Africa to launch the creative, brand consultancy, BorisHenry in 2012.
