Yanara Tavares Viana, a Mozambican entrepreneur developing a smart urban housing solution in the country

December 7, 2025 Melanie Hawken

Yanara Tavares Viana, founder, Vila Viana (Mozambique)

Startup Story

Yanara Tavares Viana is an engineer and project manager with over 15 years of experience in procurement, finance, and the development of sustainable solutions. Founder of Vila Viana, an ecological and agro-productive housing project in Catembe, she creates urban models that integrate solar energy, water harvesting and reuse, family farming, and micro-animal farming. Her vision is to combine accessible architecture with practical sustainability, inspiring communities to build in a greener, more resilient, and income-generating way. Yanara is dedicated to developing smart urban solutions for the future of Mozambique and the region.

LoA spoke to founder, Yanara Tavares Viana, about her passion for sustainable, urban housing solutions and her vision for her business.

What does your company do?

Vila Viana develops an integrated ecological condominium model, combining sustainable housing, urban agriculture, renewable energy, and intelligent resource management. The project includes efficient houses with solar energy, water harvesting and reuse systems, organic gardens, greenhouses, tilapia tanks, chicken and goat farming, and green community spaces. The mission is to create a residential ecosystem that generates autonomy, food security, and cost reduction, serving as a reference for the future of sustainable cities in Mozambique.

Vila Viana was born from the desire to transform a family plot of land into a living laboratory of sustainability, demonstrating that it is possible to build a greener future from practical solutions adapted to the Mozambican reality.

What inspired you to start your company?

The inspiration came from the need to create housing models that respond to current challenges: high energy costs, water scarcity, food insecurity, and a lack of accessible and sustainable urban solutions. I wanted to prove that ordinary families can live with quality, autonomy, and reduced environmental impact. Vila Viana was born from the desire to transform a family plot of land into a living laboratory of sustainability, demonstrating that it is possible to build a greener future from practical solutions adapted to the Mozambican reality.

What makes your company, service, or product special?

Vila Viana is an integrated, circular, and ecological project, where each element contributes to the next:

  • Solar energy powers the house and irrigation systems.

  • Water is collected, filtered, and reused.

  • Organic farming feeds the family and generates income.

  • Small-scale animal farming closes the production cycle.

  • Organic waste becomes compost.

It is a 100% local, replicable, economically accessible solution aligned with sustainable city models of the future.

• A água é captada, filtrada e reutilizada.
• O cultivo orgânico alimenta a família e gera rendimento.

The mission is to create a residential ecosystem that generates autonomy, food security, and cost reduction, serving as a reference for the future of sustainable cities in Mozambique.

Tell us a little about your team.

Currently, the operation is led by me, with occasional support from local technicians such as bricklayers, farmers, and solar system specialists. As we move towards the physical implementation phase of the condominium, the goal is to expand the team with young people from the Catembe community to promote local employment and training in green areas.

Share a bit about your entrepreneurial journey. Do you have any background in entrepreneurial activity?

Yes. Before Vila Viana, I led projects and procurement in large multinational companies, which strengthened my analytical vision and ability to manage complex operations. I worked for many years with local suppliers, sustainability models, and resource optimization—skills that I apply to my own project today. My journey has always been linked to building, developing, and continuously improving, which naturally evolved into creating an original project with a direct impact on the community.

Partilhe um pouco da sua jornada empresarial. Tem algum historial de atividade empresarial?

Sim.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

To build the first three pilot units of the condominium.

  • To create a green technology demonstration center for families.

  • To train women and young people from Catembe in organic farming and solar energy.

  • To expand the Vila Viana model to other provinces.

  • To transform the project into an international academic case study for sustainable cities and strengthen applications for my PhD in the area of sustainability and smart urban models.

Construir as primeiras três unidades-piloto do condomínio.

My journey has always been linked to building, developing, and continuously improving, which naturally evolved into creating an original project with a direct impact on the community.

What gives you the most satisfaction as an entrepreneur?

Seeing ideas become real structures. Creating solutions that alleviate costs for families. Inspiring other women to build autonomously. And feeling that Vila Viana will be a real and transformative legacy for the community.

What is the best piece of advice you can give to other women who are thinking about starting a business?

Start small, but start. Structure your vision well, protect your finances, ask for help when needed, and stay true to the impact you want to create. Progress is made through consistency, not haste.
