Stélia Dgedge, a Mozambican entrepreneur creating access to clean drinking water

October 8, 2023 Melanie Hawken

Stélia Dgedge, founder, Khuwana Water Filters Lda (Mozambique)

Startup Story

Stélia Dgedge is the founder of Khuwana Water Filters Lda, a Mozambican company dedicated to the production and sale of ceramic-based water purifying filters. She has a degree in Financial and Insurance Management from ISCTEM. Since very early on, she has always been interested in topics related to preservation, sustainability, and the environment. About five years ago Stélia was invited to be part of the Finance Department of a startup that operates in the Renewable Energy sector. It was a unique opportunity for her to demonstrate once again the knowledge obtained at the associated University and her professional experience, as she came from a company with over twenty years in the market and was well positioned in it. She discovered her purpose - a mixture of three words, “Entrepreneurship, Impact, and Sustainability”.

LoA spoke to Stélia about her business and her mission to help people get access to clean, safe drinking water and improve their quality of life.

What does your company do?

Khuwana Water Filters Lda is dedicated to the production and sale of water purifying filters made from ceramics.

What inspired you to start your company?

Access to drinking water is a human right and this is a global problem and Mozambique is falling short of this as the coverage rate is 49% of Mozambican families still do not have access to drinking water. Water is a vital and common good for humanity, therefore, it must be on the scale of humanity. Since one of the objectives of the 2030 agenda is to ensure that everyone has access to basic sanitation and drinking water, it was with this in mind that the idea of creating Khuwana came up to respond to the needs of Mozambican families with local means. For me, it’s more than offering a product to the market, the aim is to offer a sustainable and economical solution. We offer a domestic operation capable of producing water filters for residential use that promote access to clean water in urban as well as rural areas. Our mission is to provide reliable access to clean, safe water for rural communities, promoting health, sustainability and quality of life. We are committed to offering high-quality ceramic filters and comprehensive solutions that meet the unique needs of each community, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable, and prosperous future.

“Our mission is to provide reliable access to clean, safe water for rural communities, promoting health, sustainability and quality of life.”

Why should anyone use your service or product?

The Khuwana Filter is unique, firstly because it is assembled locally, there is no energy consumption during this process, and also because the raw material is local. It is also easy to transport as the competitors’ ones require some energy consumption. We offer a domestic operation capable of producing water filters for residential use that promote access to clean water in urban as well as rural areas. It has the capacity to purify 20 litres of water without any energy consumption with resources and the resources are local.

“I would like to reach all of Mozambique and be a leader in the Mozambican market in the next 5 years to increase our portfolio as the Mozambican market has many needs and Khuwana intends to bring these solutions.”

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Yes, I've already sold decorative plants, succulents, initially I did it as gifts for family friends, but I discovered that I could make it another source of income because I had a lot of support.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

I would like to reach all of Mozambique and be a leader in the Mozambican market in the next 5 years to increase our portfolio as the Mozambican market has many needs and Khuwana intends to bring these solutions.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

As an entrepreneur, the greatest satisfaction is being able to present solutions/answers to everyday problems and seeing that customers receive them with satisfaction. I consider this the opportunity to innovate and inspire other women.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Never give up, seek support if there is any difficulty. Once started, you must never give up, you can even change your field, but never give up. This is not a rewarding journey, and every day is a new learning experience. A “No” is also an opportunity for growth and opening a bigger door. Always innovate and try to understand your customers and the market in which they operate. Finally, ask to do business always thinking about our beautiful planet as this is the only one we have, so offer products/services that have this component.

Why LoA loves it…

One of the best reasons to start a business is to identify a challenge or problem and then create a viable solution that people will want or need. In the case of Stélia Dgedge, that need was creating affordable access to clean and safe drinking water in her country. Her water filter solution will help local people to transform their lives and their health, creating positive impact at a local community level.
