Oluwadunsin Bolaji, an accessory brandbuilder in Nigeria celebrating African heritage

May 26, 2024 Melanie Hawken

Oluwadunsin Bolaji, founder and Creative Director, DunsinCraft Collection LTD (Nigeria)

Startup Story

Oluwadunsin Bolaji is the founder and Creative Director of DunsinCraft Collection LTD, an Afrocentric accessory brand in Nigeria. With over 7 years’ experience, Oluwadunsin's passion for promoting African culture through fashion accessories is truly inspiring. By designing bags and jewellery using indigenous African fabrics, she showcases the richness of our African heritage and the immense potential embedded in our fabrics.

In the past three years, she has successfully empowered 1,677 children through the School Bag Initiative where she up-cycles textile waste into free school bags and empowered over 2,500 women and girls through hands-on skill training, showcasing the tangible social and economic impact of her brand in the community. Oluwadunsin was awarded the SME 100 “25 under 25” Social Entrepreneurship Award 2023. DunsinCrafts was also nominated for the Icons Award as a leading Accessory Brand in Nigeria in 2023. Her aspirations are deeply rooted in making a lasting impact on the African fashion industry and becoming a global influencer in the Afrocentric accessory fashion industry.

LoA spoke to the impact driven Oluwadunsin Bolaji about her committment to sustainable and eco-conscious practices, and her passion for empowering women and girls through skills training.

When did your start your business?

DunsinCraft Collection was founded in 2017 and became registered as a Limited Liability company in 2021. Today, we have 10 employees.

“I'm driven by a profound commitment to address the void in the fashion accessory market and tackle the absence of authentic, culturally representative fashion accessories that truly honor African heritage.”

What does your company do?

DunsinCraft Collection LTD is a sustainable Afrocentric accessory brand that designs and manufactures handbags, backpacks, laptop bags, messenger bags, waist bags, tote bags, crossbody bags, earrings, purses, neck pillows etc handcrafted using quality African fabrics such as Adire, Ankara, Raffia and Leather. Our mission is to build a brand that promotes and celebrates the cultural heritage of Africa through fashion, especially to the diaspora while preserving the planet for future generations.

We are committed to sustainable and eco-conscious practices. While profitability is important, we also place equal emphasis on making a positive impact in our community. Our initiatives are aligned with the UN SDGs, promoting cultural heritage, women empowerment, and sustainability through:

Upcycling fabric scraps into school bags for underprivileged children in local communities which has impacted 1,677 children in Ibadan, Nigeria. We have collaborated with reputable organizations such as The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) under the Center of Entrepreneurship (CENT) department, the Skill Acquisition and Empowerment Development (SAED) program of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and Academy for Women Entrepreneurs Alumnae Association (AWEAA) to organize skill acquisition programs that have empowered over 2,500 girls and women.

This purpose-driven approach resonates with our customers who value brands that prioritize social responsibility and community engagement. Our vision is to become the largest manufacturer and exporter of Afrocentric products in Africa.

What inspired you to start your company?

I'm driven by a profound commitment to address the void in the fashion accessory market and tackle the absence of authentic, culturally representative fashion accessories that truly honor African heritage.

According to a study conducted by Euromonitor International, the global fashion accessory market was valued at $321.5 billion in 2020, yet the representation of African cultural heritage within this market remains relatively limited. This lack of representation fails to cater to the growing demand for culturally authentic accessories among individuals of African descent and others that desire to experience African culture through fashion.

These statistics highlight the tangible gap in the market for authentic and culturally representative Afrocentric accessories. I founded DunsinCraft Collection to address this problem by offering a wide range of handcrafted accessories made with African fabrics to showcase the rich heritage of Africa.

With the surging interest in black-owned businesses and the high increase of immigrants to international countries, there's a growing acceptance of Africa-inspired designs both on the continent and internationally. Moreover, the allure of exporting African-made bags adds yet another layer of promise, opening avenues for sustainable growth within the African fashion sector. My ultimate vision is to stand as the foremost exporter of Afrocentric Products on a global scale, contributing significantly to the promotion and celebration of African culture and heritage through fashion.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

At DunsinCrafts, we pride ourselves on our commitment to providing high-quality Afrocentric accessories that stand the test of time. What makes our products special is our dedication to waterproofing our accessories, ensuring that they not only look great but also last longer than already existing fabric accessories.

This extra step significantly enhances their durability and extends their lifespan, offering our customers exceptional value for their money.

Our waterproof Afrocentric accessories are designed to withstand the rigors of everyday life, making them perfect for any occasion. Unlike regular accessories made with African fabrics that fades over time and are susceptible to dirt from hands, dust, or sweat, ours are easy to maintain. With just a simple wipe with a clean cloth, they look as good as new, maintaining their fabric vibrant colours and intricate designs.

By investing in our waterproof Afrocentric accessories, our customers can enjoy the confidence of knowing that they are getting a product that not only reflects their style and culture but also provides long-lasting quality and value. Whether you're dressing up for a special event or adding a touch of flair to your everyday look, our accessories are sure to impress!

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

The most difficult decision I have ever taken was starting my fashion brand. I come from a low-income household of 7. I lost my father to cancer at the age of 15 and I grew up watching my mother take up the role of 2 parents. She is the most hardworking woman I know, and I learned everything I know about entrepreneurship from her.

I started my business as an undergraduate in 2017 out of the need to become financially independent. I took an interest in the world of Ankara bags and jewelry, and I invested time practicing my skills while balancing business with academics. It was then that I discovered my creative side. It was the most difficult decision I ever made because I didn’t have any capital or business experience, just my passion and determination to succeed. This decision shaped me to become who I am today. My business has grown with hundreds of customers from different countries around the world.

I have achieved several significant milestones on my entrepreneurial journey which include:

  1. Tony Elumelu Foundation Grant: I was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Tony Elumelu Foundation, a renowned philanthropic organization that supports entrepreneurs across Africa.

  2. Global Student Entrepreneurship Award: I received an award from the Global Student Entrepreneurship Award (GSEA) in partnership with the Netherlands Business School.

  3. Industrial Machine Grant: In February 2020, I received an industrial machine grant from the Biodun and Ibikunle Foundation, which has provided valuable equipment to support my business's production capabilities.

  4. The Next Titan Entrepreneurship Reality TV Show: I participated in The Next Titan, an entrepreneurship reality TV show, becoming an alumni in August 2020. This platform provided valuable exposure and opportunities for my business.

  5. Partnership with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC): In January 2021, I formed a partnership with the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) department as a Trainer during the orientation camp. This collaboration allowed me to contribute to the development and empowerment of over 700 young graduates in Nigeria.

  6. Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) Graduate: I successfully completed the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs program, an initiative by the U.S. Consulate, graduating in November 2021.

  7. Nigeria Tech Summit Prize: In December 2021, I won the $1,500 prize perks from the Nigeria Tech Summit in partnership with the Global Startup Ecosystem.

  8. In 2023, I was elected as the Public Relations Officer of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs Alumnae Association (AWEAA)

  9. I received my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) certification from Access bank in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

  10. I received the SME 100 "25 under 25" Social Entrepreneurship Award 2023

I aim to inspire a movement where education, empowerment, and sustainability converge. By equipping young girls and women with the tools they need to succeed, I want to see them not only transform their own lives but also become catalysts for change within their communities just like myself.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

DunsinCrafts is on a mission to illuminate African culture through the lens of fashion, and my vision for the brand is expansive and purposeful.

Looking ahead, DunsinCrafts is poised to become the preeminent manufacturer and exporter of Afrocentric accessories in Africa. This journey involves a commitment to cultural representation by delving into diverse African fabrics, experimenting with materials, and infusing innovative features that authentically reflect our rich heritage.

Our trajectory extends beyond local success, reaching toward global prominence. We aspire to forge international connections, cultivating partnerships and resonating with a global audience that values and celebrates Afrocentric accessories.

Our dedication to social impact is a guiding force. In the years to come, we plan to amplify our initiatives, scaling skill acquisition programs, and expanding our contributions to sustainable practices. The School Bag Initiative for underprivileged children is a testament to our commitment to making a tangible difference.

Innovation in design will be a hallmark of DunsinCrafts' future. Staying ahead of trends, experimenting with new concepts, and ensuring our accessories not only reflect culture but also set trends in the fashion landscape is integral to our identity.

In conclusion, the future of DunsinCrafts is an evolving narrative woven with cultural pride, global influence, and a steadfast commitment to meaningful impact. We embark on a journey to shape not only the trajectory of Afrocentric fashion but also to contribute to the enduring cultural legacy of Africa on a grand scale.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

As an entrepreneur, nothing brings me greater satisfaction than witnessing the impact my accessories have on my customers. It's not just about the sales figures or profit margins; it's about the genuine feedback and reactions from individuals who wear our products. Hearing their stories, seeing their smiles, and knowing that our accessories add value to their lives fills me with immense joy and fulfillment.

Every positive review, every thank-you message, and every repeat customer reaffirms my belief in the products we create and the mission we stand for. It's incredibly rewarding to know that something I've worked hard to develop is making a difference in people's lives, whether it's boosting their confidence, completing their outfits, or simply bringing them joy.

This satisfaction doesn't just stop at the feelings level; it motivates me to push further, to innovate, and to expand our reach.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

My advice to any woman looking to start up her own business is to follow her passion and leverage her unique strengths. If you're a creative person unsure of what venture to pursue, I highly recommend exploring the Afrocentric accessory niche. Not only is it a profitable market, but it's also incredibly rewarding.

When starting out, focus on honing your craft, understanding your target audience, and creating products that resonate with them. Build a strong brand identity that reflects your values and vision, and don't be afraid to take risks and innovate. Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, peers, and advisors who can offer guidance and help navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship.

Remember, success doesn't happen overnight, so stay persistent, resilient, and adaptable in the face of obstacles. Embrace the journey, learn from your experiences, and never underestimate the power of your creativity and passion to drive your business forward. With dedication and determination, you can turn your entrepreneurial dreams into reality in the Afrocentric accessory niche or any other field you choose to pursue.
