Isabel Mandofa, a Mozambican woman entrepreneur building a successful, high-impact agri-food business

November 25, 2025 Melanie Hawken

Isabel Mandofa, founder, Tropicalisa, Lda (Mozambique)

Startup Story

Isabel Mandofa is the founder of Tropicalisa, Lda, a Mozambican agri-food industry business focused on the sustainable transformation of local fruits into high-value-added products. It operates an integrated chain that buys surplus from small producers, processes, freezes and distributes fruit pulps, natural juices, syrups, sauces and frozen fruits, guaranteeing standardized quality, traceability and food safety. Tropicalisa’s core business is to make the most of national fruit, reduce post-harvest losses and supply the market during the off-season, providing practical, healthy and competitive solutions for supermarkets, restaurants, confectioneries, ice cream parlors, hotels and end consumers.

LoA spoke to founder, Isabel Mandofa, to learn more about her entrepreneurial journey to date, and her inspirational vision for the business.

Tell us about yourself

I am Isabel Mandofa, founder and CEO of Tropicalisa, Lda, a Mozambican company born from the dream and determination to transform local fruits into value-added products. Launched in 2015, today the company employs 12 people. My entrepreneurial journey began in 2014, driven by a genuine desire to be an entrepreneur and create something with purpose. During this period, I worked in several companies, accumulating valuable experiences that would later prove fundamental to the construction of Tropicalisa. In 2016, I joined the Tivoli Maputo Hotel as Executive Secretary and Events Coordinator. It was an intense and transformative phase, in which I had the opportunity to participate in practically all of the hotel's operations—from human resources management, customer service, production, and accounting to compliance with food hygiene standards (HACCP). Each area taught me something new and prepared me, without me even knowing it, for the challenges of leading my own company. Later, I was promoted and transferred to the Hotel Avenida Maputo, where I took on a role in sales, responsible for the sale and representation of the group's three hotels, including the Hotel Tivoli Beira. It was an equally enriching experience that broadened my strategic vision, improved my negotiation skills, and solidified my leadership spirit. After a little over a year, I realized that my true calling was blossoming. Tropicalisa had grown and needed a dedicated full-time leader. So I made the decision to resign and take full command of the company. It was a decisive moment: I visited clients personally, redesigned product lines and business strategies, restructured the organisation, and invested in employee training. During COVID-19, we saw sales plummet by 100% and had to reinvent ourselves, creating the shelf-stable juices that have now conquered the market. Later, competitors came along with lower prices, and once again, we were caught off guard and had to reposition ourselves to avoid losing our market share. Today, with over a decade in the market, Tropicalisa is a benchmark brand in the Mozambican agri-food sector, recognized for its quality, authenticity, and commitment to sustainability. My journey as a female entrepreneur has not been easy. There were sleepless nights, moments of extreme exhaustion, and tears of uncertainty. I thought about giving up many times, but Tropicalisa ceased to be just a dream—it became a reality with social and economic impact. Today, the company supports local farmers, preventing fruit waste by buying surplus produce; it generates jobs and offers Mozambicans natural, high-quality products made with our own fruits, such as masala, maphilua, malambe, tamarind, and other traditional fruits from Mozambican childhood. More than a brand, Tropicalisa is a symbol of resilience, innovation, and national pride—proof that, with purpose and determination, it is possible to transform what is ours into something great, sustainable, and inspiring.

Today, my motivation has evolved into a deeper mission: to combat food waste, increase the income of small producers, and ensure that fruit is accessible to Mozambican families throughout the year.

What inspired you to start your company?

Initially, I was driven by the purpose of entrepreneurship and demonstrating that Mozambique can create industries from start-ups. Today, my motivation has evolved into a deeper mission: to combat food waste, increase the income of small producers, and ensure that fruit is accessible to Mozambican families throughout the year. I want to add value to national fruit that was previously underutilized and transform it into high-value products that boost the economy and make our country proud.

What makes your company, service, or product special?

Tropicalisa is special because it transforms surplus fruit into high-value products with standardized quality, combats food waste, and ensures that domestically produced fruits are available year-round. We create a real impact on the income of small producers, generate local jobs, and offer practical, healthy, and sustainable solutions for the market.

Tell us a little about your team

We work with strong operational discipline, a focus on continuous improvement and a culture of social impact. The team believes in the mission and is aligned to scale the operation and consolidate Tropicalisa as a national benchmark in fruit processing.

Share a bit about your entrepreneurial journey. Do you have any prior experience in business?

I started Tropicalisa in a handcrafted way, with minimal resources, learning by doing, making mistakes, adjusting, and evolving until we built the industry we have today. I started driven by the dream of being an entrepreneur and the belief that Mozambique can create world-renowned brands. I grew up seeing large companies triumph, but few of them were Mozambican—and that sparked in me the desire to change that reality. Over time, I realized that Tropicalisa could be more than a brand: it could be a tool to transform the country. That's how our mission also became to combat food waste, create value for small farmers, industrialize national fruit, and ensure that Mozambican families have access to fruit throughout the year. The path was difficult. During COVID-19, we saw virtually all of our clients—restaurants—forced to close. Giving up was never an option. We reinvented ourselves. We created new products, opened new markets, and turned the crisis into a window for growth. Today, after many battles, we received the "Business with Social Impact" award from AMEEA – Women Entrepreneurs Europe-Africa, which gives us the certainty that the struggle is worthwhile and that our impact is being recognized. We remain focused on growth, with humility, resilience, and vision — always aware that this journey is bigger than ourselves.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

From a strategic perspective, we want to scale and industrialize even further. We believe that the more we grow, the greater our contribution will be to achieving the goal of zero food waste. We intend to expand production capacity, generate more jobs, and strengthen the national and international valuation of our products. At the same time, we want to guarantee market security for small farmers—ensuring that 99% of what they produce will have a commercial destination and real value—creating stability, confidence, and sustainable growth for the entire chain.

We create a real impact on the income of small producers, generate local jobs, and offer practical, healthy, and sustainable solutions for the market.

What gives you the most satisfaction as an entrepreneur?

The greatest satisfaction for me is seeing real impact happen. Seeing fruit that was previously wasted transform into a product, seeing farmers with guaranteed income, seeing young people gain jobs and skills, and seeing a Mozambican brand conquer space where before there were only imports. What fulfills me most is knowing that each advance of Tropicalisa represents progress for many other people besides me — and that we are proving, in practice, that Mozambique can create relevant, competitive, and socially transformative industries.

What is the best piece of advice you can give to other women who are thinking about starting a business?

The best piece of advice I can give to other women is: start, even small, but with a clear purpose and strategic discipline. Industry is born from the courage to start, the resilience to continue, and the vision to transform challenges into opportunities. Seek to connect with support networks — mentorships, programs, incubators, and other female entrepreneurs — because no one grows alone. And, above all, try to solve one of the many challenges of our country in your business. When a project is born to serve a greater purpose, it gains strength, impact, and sustainability. Each consistent step builds the future — and Mozambique needs more women leading this movement.
