Performance Management: Creating Performance Dashboards That Work

May 17, 2025 Melanie Hawken

by Dr Michélle Booysen

“What gets measured gets managed.” – Peter Drucker

Performance dashboards are powerful tools to drive decision-making, improve efficiency, and align daily operations with strategic goals. For dashboards to truly work, they must be simple, relevant, and actionable. A well-crafted performance dashboard is not about volume of data—it’s about clarity and purpose.

1. Start with Clear Business Goals

Before creating a dashboard, define what success looks like. Are you aiming to grow revenue, improve customer service, reduce costs, or enhance productivity? Each goal should be linked to measurable outcomes. A clear purpose ensures that your dashboard highlights what truly matters.

2. Choose the Right Metrics

Focus on key performance indicators (KPIs) that reflect progress toward your goals. For example:

  • For sales: conversion rates, pipeline value

  • For customer service: response time, satisfaction scores

  • For operations: turnaround time, error rates Avoid vanity metrics that look good but don’t drive action.

3. Keep It Simple and Visual

Use simple charts, traffic lights, or progress bars to convey performance. Avoid clutter and technical jargon. A clear dashboard allows your team to identify what’s working and what needs attention.

4. Align Dashboards with Roles

Not all users need the same information. Tailor dashboards by role:

  • A CEO may want a high-level view of financial and strategic KPIs.

  • A sales manager needs detailed sales activity and pipeline metrics.

  • A customer service lead monitors ticket resolution times.

Dashboards become more meaningful when they’re relevant to each user.

5. Make It Part of the Routine

A dashboard is not a static report—it’s a dynamic management tool. Use it in team meetings, performance tracking, and decision-making sessions. Regular use reinforces focus and accountability.

6. Update and Evolve

As your business grows, your goals and priorities will shift. Review your dashboard periodically to ensure it still aligns with your current strategy. Update metrics, adjust targets, and improve data quality to keep it relevant.

Key Takeaway

A great dashboard is one that drives action. That means starting small, keeping it simple, and linking every indicator to a business goal. When well-executed, performance dashboards become essential tools for alignment, accountability, and performance.

Next Steps: Identify one core business goal. Select 3–5 meaningful KPIs linked to that goal. Design a simple, visual dashboard and use it consistently to monitor progress and guide decisions.
