Afifah Zualo, a Mozambican artisan entrepreneur creating ethnic contemporary jewellery celebrating beadwork

August 26, 2024 Melanie Hawken

Afifah Zualo, founder, M'Kono (Mozambique)

Startup Story

Afifah Zualo is an artisan (multi-artist) entrepreneur and the founder of M'Kono in Mozambique. She trained in Railway Engineering, but today sees the design of ethnic-contemporary jewellery as a way of codifying feelings and expressing Mozambican identity. Her Mozambican start-up seeks to honour cultural traditions while innovating in design and technique. A Leader and Social Innovator, Afifah employs a single employee, but her startup generates income for six other participants in her community who participate in the business passively. She believes in a world in which all women are respected and have justice for their efforts returned and aspires to conquer the world with her work.

LoA chatted to the highly creative Afifah Zualo to learn more about her inspiration, her motivation as an entrepreneur, and her vision for the business

What does your company do?

M’kono is a Mozambican ethnic-contemporary jewellery brand that works mainly with beads, combining them with other materials to create unique and stylized pieces. M’Kono’s pieces are a fusion of traditional Mozambican designs with modern touches, reflecting both cultural heritage and contemporary trends. M’Kono uses geometric patterns and vibrant colours, typical of local traditions, to create visually striking jewellery. Our jewellery includes necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other adornments, all made with attention to detail and quality. In addition to jewellery, the brand produces other accessories (bags and belts) that incorporate beads and various materials.

M’Kono’s pieces are more than just accessories; they carry cultural meanings and are an expression of Mozambican identity. The brand promotes local crafts, valuing traditional techniques and contributing to the economy of its community. M’Kono has its values stated on sustainability, “up-cycling”, preservation and community.

“M’Kono’s pieces are more than just accessories; they carry cultural meanings and are an expression of Mozambican identity.”

What inspired you to start your company?

My mother raised us (me and 4 brothers) with a small business selling samosas that operated in the kitchen of our small house. It seems meaningless if we think about the relationship that a kitchen would have with crafts, but the difference was in the way it coordinated the activities and the speed with which the snacks were rolled (1200 samosas could be rolled in 4 hours). That has always fascinated me. Around the age of 11, I started playing with beads and stopped when I was 15 to focus more on school.

When I was entering my third year of college, I began to question the student journey and felt a deep need to “do something for myself”. With an investment of 500 meticais, I returned to my old passion and started creating my own pieces. After 5 years of research and immersion in our culture, where I discovered that my maternal grandmother and great-grandmother had been potters, M’Kono was born - the greatest manifestation of the connection and legacy of the women in my maternal family.

Isso sempre fascinou-me.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

All the work at hand involves a lot of exchange of energy between the creative and the piece under construction. What makes my products special are their quality, durability, the sensations of belonging and connection given to those who use them, sensations of well-being, and above all, their originality and beauty. The best option for those looking for something different but that makes them feel part of something bigger.

“My biggest plan, which I call purpose, is to make M’Kono a brand with such firm roots that it can span generations.”

“My aspirations are aimed at expanding the brand across the country globalizing it, and being recognized for our contribution and quality.”

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

From the research process to now it has been 5 years. My journey has been entirely focused on M’Kono and the incessant research into the world of arts and culture.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

My biggest plan, which I call purpose, is to make M’Kono a brand with such firm roots that it can span generations. My aspirations are aimed at expanding the brand across the country globalizing it, and being recognized for our contribution and quality.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Understanding that M’Kono is synonymous with Mozambique.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

To other women, the advice I give is not to give up on your dreams and to seek training and connect with people (individuals or not) who are following or already have a similar path. There is nothing that can stop a soul full of desire. Focus on your goals.
