Mozambican environmental consultancy, Redes de Luxo e Servicos, founded by Carla Mahumane, aims to contribute to the protection of marine ecosystems through female and community empowerment. The business has launched a new product line of accessories and clothing using recycled fishing nets. The business is not only providing an environmental solution to the problem of discarded fishing nets, but is also upskilling local women and girls. Redes de Luxo e Servicos has also developed training programmes for women and girls in cutting and sewing techniques and weaving fishing nets to produce accessories such as bags, earrings, necklaces, wallets, and clothes from the reuse of discarded fishing nets.
Redes de Luxo e Servicos commits to sustainability, producing accessories and clothing for sale, and designing personalized clothing using fishing nets for customers. The company also provides environmental consultancy (facilitators) to public and private organizations. It designs and implements environmental and community projects aimed at conserving marine and terrestrial ecosystems, female and community empowerment, and climate change.
What makes the Redes de Luxo e Servicos range of products different is that the brand uses fishing nets discarded by fishermen and/or learned from fishermen by maritime authorities because they are harmful to fishing. The business uses them as raw materials to produce accessories and parts.
Speaking about her aspirations for the new product range, founder Carla Mahumane says, “These items are seen as having environmental value. They overcome the taboos that objects or articles made from reusing waste cannot be used without prejudice in people's daily lives. They increase people's level of environmental sensitivity about the management of marine litter and the protection of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.”
Founder Carla Mahumane hopes that the launch of this new range of earrings, clothing, sandals, and slippers decorated with recycled fishing nets, will result in them being seen on the catwalks as sustainable products and contributors to the circular economy.
