What you think about, you bring about

March 18, 2024 Melanie Hawken

by Margaret Hirsch

My mother was English and throughout my life my conversations with her have always been peppered with sayings and idioms. My favourite saying is one by Albert Einstein which says "Your imagination is the preview to coming attractions” and this is so true in your life. This quote emphasises the profound significance of imagination in our lives. Imagination is more than just idle daydreaming; it is the catalyst for innovation and progress. It allows us to envision possibilities that do not yet exist and serves as a plan for creating the future.

Remember the one “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." When last did you just sit and think about what you really want- and then having thought about it, did you write it down??  Thats really important as “if it’s not on paper, it’s just vapour”.  I can type faster than I can talk but some things have to be recorded. All goals need to be written in your own hand - it’s almost as if by doing this everyone, including the universe, realises that you mean what you say. Writing your goals at the beginning of the year, reviewing them every week (I choose a Sunday night) and adjusting and building on them has been the secret of my success, both in business and personally.

I remember another saying which goes “Be careful what you ask for as you may just get it.” This has happened to me so many times previously but more recently in my own life - my mother had a very sharp tongue and often caustic humour, as did one of my heroines, Joan Rivers. I used to wish for a syrupy sweet mother who would only say nice things - the problem is that as my mother got older she started to lose that whit which I was used to and she had become the innocuous, sweet person that I had wished for but with that I missed the barbs which were usually levelled at me and I longed for the brutal honesty that kept me humble at all times.

Another favourite saying is “What you think about, you bring about,” By visualising our goals, desires and acting as if we already have them, we can manifest them into reality.  While this concept may seem like just wishful thinking, there is growing scientific evidence to support the idea that our thoughts do really influence our reality.  We were in need of a new PRO for some of our Gauteng branches - no matter how many people we interviewed the right person did not appear, so I just sat quietly one afternoon and thought of the perfect person for this job.  I wanted her to be young, energetic, hardworking, I needed a lady to take over a lot of my ladies’ clubs and events; she had to have her own car, laptop and be self-motivated.  I conceptualised the perfect person in my mind and wrote down the attributes she needed.  The very next morning I received a call from the agency to say, ‘we have the perfect person for you’ and immediately thereafter I met Kayla, interviewed her and gave her the job - she ticked all the boxes.

A third is “If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand."  A vision board is the perfect example of this.  It brings everything into the present tense - to put a picture of your dream house, dream car, dream life partner and perfect family, onto a board with a picture of the perfect you in the middle, will give you structure to work towards what you want, rather than just going to work every day to put food on the table and a roof over your head.  Put it in a spot where it can be seen every day, on the mirror where you brush your teeth, another copy on the inside of your cupboard door so that you see it every time you get your clothes out - a favourite spot is on the fridge, especially if you are trying to lose weight - seeing a slim, trim body staring back at you will make you decide not to take that snack out the fridge as "nothing tastes as good as slim feels."

However, when most people think about their lives, its usually thoughts of worry - and "worry is predicting the future you don't want."  Its thinking about what you don't want to happen and then that is usually what happens as by the law of attraction you draw this to yourself.  In the book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne this is explained in detail - it’s a free download on the internet and when I speak to people, they tell me that the first time they read it they really don't understand, on the second reading it starts to take shape in your mind and the third time you read it, the penny usually drops and you have that amazing “lightbulb” moment where the understanding comes into your mind and ultimately into your life, that you can have anything you want, do anything you want and become the person you would like to be - all you need to do is think about it and then take MASSIVE ACTION in the direction of your dreams.

If you can change your mind, you can change your life - everything starts with a thought - even you started with a thought - it was the gleam in your Dad’s eye that evening!!

The knack is to control your thoughts and only think about the positive - only what you want and never what you don't!  As that negative thought comes into your mind, dismiss it immediately and replace it with a positive thought. In the beginning it takes a lot of remembering - at Hirsch's we wear an elastic band on our left wrist and the moment that negative thought comes into our minds, we pull the band hard and let it hit the vein on the inside of your wrist - the pain shoots through your entire body and reminds you to stop thinking the negative thought and replace with a positive one.  After a few snaps of the elastic band, you will find yourself stopping before the negative thought hits, and changing it to a positive thought.

"The words you speak are what you prophesy into your life”. Never were truer words said - you need to practise - instead of saying “don't forget” say “please remember”. A simple exercise like this will help you to always turn the negative into a positive and as you do, by the law of attraction, you are able to manifest more positive things into your life.  Never moan and groan, else by the law of attraction you draw more to moan and groan about.  As that negative thought comes in, replace it with one of gratitude and you have so much to be grateful for, for the family in your home, the job you have and the money you get at the end of each month.  Be grateful for everything you have, no matter how little and by the law of attraction you will always have more to be grateful for.  Never say “I want to..” Else you will find yourself continually wanting to…..be rich, be happy, be popular..

Rather say “I am”. The two strongest words in the world.  Write the “ I am” down and then after that put in all the things you really want to be.  By acting as if you already have all the things you will be amazed at how quickly they come to you - but only if you take the MASSIVE ACTION that is needed and hopefully today will be the day you start.

Sent with love.
