Chinenye Macuacua, a Mozambican entrepreneur building an upcycling fashion business with style

November 5, 2023 Melanie Hawken

Chinenye Macuacua, founder, Powa Clothing (Mozambique)

Startup Story

Chinenye Macuacua is the visionary founder of Powa Clothing in Mozambique, a  company dedicated to the art of upcycling, breathing new life into discarded clothing while also crafting fresh garments from dead stock fabrics. She embarked on her entrepreneurial journey in 2018, immediately after completing high school. Chinenye has been the driving force behind her one-woman business for five years, demonstrating both her passion for sustainability and her creative prowess. Her dreams extend beyond her solo venture, aspiring to build a community of empowered, eco-conscious fashion enthusiasts who share her commitment to breathe new life into the old. Specializing in the transformation of men's suits, Chinenye is drawn to the empowering aura that suits exude. This attraction fuels her dedication to upcycling this iconic clothing item, infusing it with renewed purpose and style. As Powa Clothing thrives, Chinenye envisions expansion, aiming to inspire and mentor young women, passing on her passion for upcycling.

LoA spoke to Chinenye about her entrepreneurial journey, her love of upcycling, and her vision for the future of her business.

What does your company do?

Powa Clothing specializes in sustainable fashion and the transformation of old clothing into new and stylish pieces. The brand is dedicated to creating unique, eco-friendly fashion items with a strong focus on empowerment and sustainability.

“Our brand specializes in the art of sustainable fashion, where we take old and discarded clothing and transform them into fresh, stylish, and eco-friendly garments. We prioritize reducing waste and minimizing our environmental footprint.”

What inspired you to start your company?

What inspired me to start the company was a suggestion from a friend. As I began this journey, I discovered a newfound passion for fashion. Although I had always possessed a creative streak, I had never truly explored it. The process of establishing my own brand ignited a transformation in my personal style, and it gave me a sense of empowerment. This shift in self-confidence and style fueled a desire to extend the same empowerment to other women, inspiring them to feel just as confident and empowered in their own skin.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

WA Clothing stands out for several reasons, making it a special and unique brand:

Sustainable Transformation: Our brand specializes in the art of sustainable fashion, where we take old and discarded clothing and transform them into fresh, stylish, and eco-friendly garments. We prioritize reducing waste and minimizing our environmental footprint.

One-of-a-Kind Creations: Every piece of clothing we create is unique and one-of-a-kind. Our designs carry a personal touch, making each garment a special statement of individuality and style for our customers.

Empowerment of Women: The name "POWA" embodies our commitment to empowering women.

Fashion-Forward Designs: While we prioritize sustainability, our creations are fashion-forward. We blend the latest fashion trends with eco-conscious practices, allowing customers to make a style statement while supporting responsible fashion.

Community Support: We source our materials locally, supporting the community and contributing to the local economy. This approach ensures that our brand has a positive impact not only on the environment but also on the people around us.

Resourceful Learning: Our journey is characterized by resourceful learning. We started with limited resources and learned everything we know through online platforms and self-education. This self-taught approach reflects our commitment to constant growth and improvement.

In summary, what makes POWA Clothing special is the combination of sustainability, individuality, female empowerment, fashionable designs, community support, and a journey of resourceful learning. We're not just a brand; we're a movement that promotes positive change in fashion and beyond.

“The heart of my journey is empowerment and sustainability. My brand, POWA Clothing, embodies the idea that fashion can be both eco-friendly and empowering, proving that one can make a positive impact even without a formal entrepreneurial background.”

Tell us a little about your team:

POWA Clothing is currently a small, one-person brand led by its founder, Chinenye Macuacua. While the team may be compact, its aspirations and commitment to sustainable fashion and female empowerment are significant. Chinenye is the visionary behind POWA Clothing. She is the driving force, responsible for the creative direction, design, and day-to-day operations of the brand. Her passion for sustainable fashion, her resourcefulness, and her dedication to empowering women are the guiding principles that steer the brand's growth. As POWA Clothing continues to expand and achieve its goals, Chinenye envisions the possibility of training and employing more women in the future, creating a team of like-minded individuals who share her vision and values. Her dream is to foster a community of empowered women and sustainability advocates who contribute to the brand's continued success and impact.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

My entrepreneurial journey has been an incredible adventure, filled with learning, growth, and a profound commitment to sustainability and empowerment. I didn't come from a family with a history of entrepreneurship, but my journey began with a suggestion from a friend. This simple idea ignited a spark in me to explore my creative side and delve into the world of fashion.

Starting my business was far from conventional. I began with minimal resources, no formal training in sewing, and not even a sewing machine. Despite these limitations, I was determined to turn my vision into reality. Armed with needles and thread, I ventured into the world of fashion, crafting one-of-a-kind pieces from old clothing.

What truly defined my entrepreneurial journey was my unwavering commitment to self-education. I turned to online platforms like YouTube to learn essential sewing techniques, improve my skills, and expand my knowledge. I watched countless tutorials and practiced relentlessly to refine my craft.

As my skills grew, so did my business. Initially, I had a partner who handled sales, while I focused on the creative aspect. However, when my partner left the business, I decided to shift my focus towards sustainable fashion, upcycling, and empowering women. This shift led to the birth of POWA Clothing, a brand that represents my values and aspirations.

The heart of my journey is empowerment and sustainability. My brand, POWA Clothing, embodies the idea that fashion can be both eco-friendly and empowering, proving that one can make a positive impact even without a formal entrepreneurial background.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

My vision for the future of POWA Clothing is grounded in empowerment, sustainability, and growth. Here are my future plans and aspirations for the company:

Expanding the Team - While I currently run POWA Clothing as a one-person brand, my long-term aspiration is to build a dedicated team. I want to create job opportunities, particularly for women in my community, who share the same passion for sustainable fashion and female empowerment.

Training and Education - I’m committed to training more individuals, especially women, in the art of sustainable fashion. As the brand grows, I aim to establish an educational platform to provide hands-on training and workshops. This will not only empower more individuals but also contribute to the growth of the sustainable fashion community.

Diversifying the Product Line - I plan to expand our product line to include a broader range of sustainable fashion items. This includes not only upcycling old clothing but also creating entirely new pieces from eco-friendly materials. I aspire to offer a diverse and comprehensive collection of sustainable fashion options.

Market Expansion - While I currently source materials from local markets, I aim to expand my reach and source sustainable materials from a wider network. This will not only support my brand's growth but also contribute to the sustainability of local businesses and artisans.

Online Presence - Establishing a strong online presence is a key part of my future plans. I aim to reach a broader audience and raise awareness about sustainable fashion and female empowerment through digital platforms and e-commerce.

Collaborations and Partnerships - I intend to seek collaborations and partnerships with organizations that share our values. This can include partnerships with sustainable fashion organizations, women's empowerment groups, and environmental initiatives to amplify our impact.

Global Recognition - My ultimate aspiration is for POWA Clothing to gain recognition on a global scale. I want to share our story, our commitment to sustainability, and our dedication to empowering women with the world. This recognition will help drive positive change in the fashion industry and inspire others to follow a similar path.

In summary, my future plans and aspirations for POWA Clothing revolve around expansion, education, diversity, and making a global impact. The brand's journey is still in its early stages, and I'm excited to see how it can continue to grow and inspire change in the world of sustainable fashion.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

As an entrepreneur, what gives me the most satisfaction is the ability to make a meaningful impact in several ways:

Sustainability Advocacy: Knowing that my business practices align with sustainability and contribute to reducing textile waste and environmental impact brings a deep sense of satisfaction. It's gratifying to be part of a movement that promotes responsible consumption and production.

Creative Expression: Entrepreneurship allows me to fully express my creativity. Designing unique and sustainable fashion pieces and witnessing others embrace and enjoy them is immensely satisfying. It's a form of artistic self-expression that I cherish.

Personal Growth: The entrepreneurial journey has been a significant source of personal growth. Overcoming challenges, continuously learning, and adapting to new circumstances has been a deeply fulfilling part of my journey.

Positive Feedback: Hearing positive feedback from customers who appreciate the unique, sustainable, and stylish pieces I create is incredibly satisfying. It reinforces that I'm on the right path and resonating with my audience.

Future Impact: Knowing that my entrepreneurial journey has the potential to create a more significant impact in the future is a constant source of motivation and satisfaction. I'm excited about the possibilities for growth and making an even greater difference in the world of sustainable fashion and female empowerment.

In summary, the satisfaction I derive from being an entrepreneur comes from the ability to empower others, promote sustainability, express my creativity, experience personal growth, support the local community, receive positive feedback, and envision a future filled with opportunities for positive change.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

The most important advice I can offer to other women looking to start their own business is:

Believe in Yourself and Your Vision. Confidence in yourself and your vision is the foundation of a successful startup. Believe in your capabilities, trust your instincts, and have faith in the unique value you bring to the world. Entrepreneurship can be challenging, but unwavering self-belief will help you overcome obstacles and persist through tough times. You can accomplish what you desire.
