Tatyana Moeda, an Angolan entrepreneur turning a passion for baking into a successful cake business

August 7, 2022 Melanie Hawken

Tatyana Moeda, founder, Miss Cake (Angola)

Startup Story

If you appreciate how special a good cake can be, and how a great cake can  make any occasion truly memorable, then Miss Cake, founded by Tatyana Moeda in Angola is a business you need to check out. It creates delicious cakes for every type of event, from an afternoon tea to a celebratory party, and is building a great reputation for her products with clients.

LoA learned more about this passion driven business that is taking the home baking flavours we all love to a whole new level.

What does your company do?

My company is focused on baking. We bake cakes with a special and unique home flavour.

“I never thought that today I would be an entrepreneur. It’s funny how nature leads you to the right path.”

“My entrepreneurial journey is teaching me different ways of seeing life, and today I am responsible for at least five families -  a total of 20 people.”

What inspired you to start your company?

My family love catering. We are a family of ten, including eight sisters and two brothers and the girls love to cook. So, each one of us has a different way of doing things. My mom used to work in a bakery store, and on the weekend she would always try new things at home. We used to love watching her, and as the oldest one I always had the responsibility to help her until the day she decided not to work anymore. Well, for me and my sisters it was just a start. We started to compete against each other, doing challenges and creating different flavours for everything we would bake until we all got married and we stopped. One day I decided to invite all of them for an afternoon tea and I was not sure what I would give them to eat, so I thought maybe now that we all have our own homes, we could start a different competition. I thought, what about if we started baking for each other’s houses? But first I will try this new flavour and I will see what will they say. Well, one of my sisters came in the afternoon tea with a friend she tried the cake and never said anything, and the next day she was calling me to order it. I accepted, and then I was so surprised because I was getting orders for so many people for the weekend and it never stopped up until today, so I decided to formalize the activity by creating my company, Miss Cake.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

The flavour and the special chocolate sauce we create.

Tell us a little about your team

My team is the best I could ever have, and we work as a family for great results. They are very serious about what we do, they work very hard and are committed to the work.

Transferring knowledge is so gratifying, it feels like giving people the chance to be like me one day.

The best part of this entrepreneurial journey is the satisfaction I see on my clients’ faces. It is the best feeling of a mission accomplished.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

I never thought that today I would be an entrepreneur. It’s funny how nature leads you to the right path. My journey is teaching me different ways of seeing life, and today I am responsible for at least five families -  a total of 20 people. Transferring knowledge is so gratifying, it feels like giving people the chance to be like me one day. The best part of this entrepreneurial journey is the satisfaction I see on my clients’ faces. It is the best feeling of a mission accomplished.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

Expand my brand and bring more women and young girls into the business.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Sharing my ideas and dreams, giving opportunity to people that you get to know and help you make things become a reality.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Don’t get distracted. Distraction is your worst enemy.

Why LoA loves it…

It is always good to see women entrepreneurs who turn a passion and a personal skill into a business opportunity, and Tatyana Moeda has done just that with her business and brand, Miss Cake. Her love of baking and cake-making specifically, and her reputation and skill for creating unique and highly memorable cakes for people, paved the way for the growing business she has today. Tatyana is a great example of an entrepreneur who is turning her love for what she does into a successful business poised for further growth and development. — Melanie Hawken, founder & ceo, Lionesses of Africa
