Lilly Loompa Creative is a South African brand known to many eco-conscious homeware consumers for its inventive hipcycling approach to transforming discarded waste into design conscious items for people to love. Founder, Lizl Naude, has just launched the latest must-have product which is already getting people talking - the My Africa Lap Desk. This portable piece of furniture is just the thing for home workers who want to create a comfortable yet stylish desk solution.

At Lilly Loompa Creative, founder and creative designer Lizl Naude is constantly looking for ways of transforming discarded waste into beautiful homeware products. The business has built up a reputation over the past couple of years for manufacturing a variety of products, from storage holders, lamps, to dinner table accessories, among others. Lilly Loompa Creative’s homeware is created through a process of hipcycling, which is essentially upcycling discarded waste and transforming it into desirable products that would complement your home. Eco-friendly, handcrafted and 100% South African, each Lilly Loompa piece, once trash, is now a meaningful piece of treasure.

The launch of the latest exciting product, My Africa Lap Desk, was inspired through South Africa’s lockdown period. Speaking about where the idea for the product came from, Lizl says:

“In May 2020, during lockdown, my family and I took a walk around the small holding where we live. I noticed a discarded piece of wood and picked it up. It was a little heavy, so I put it aside and asked my hubby to collect it with the car when he passed there again. It took him a good few weeks to eventually remember!  He finally brought it home and having a slight obsession with the shape of the African continent, I immediately knew what it was going to be - a portable lap desk in the shape of Africa. I didn’t know how to do it, but my gift kicked in, and God gave me the insight on how to do it with the limited tools I had. What makes this even more unique is that I drew the Africa shape by hand, so not every nook and cranny is accurate. But that makes it even more special. Unaware of the response I would get, I posted a picture of me holding the frame on AFRICA DAY! Surprisingly, I was inundated with people requesting the product. Thus, I had to improvise. So what started out as a personal DIY décor project for my home, is now a range product added to my range! The latest being the "My Africa Lap Desk”, which is totally exclusive to Lilly Loompa Creative!”

The My Africa Lap Desk is a great option for those who work from home and need a desk to aid with posture. It can be used as a desk for your laptop, a breakfast tray and a reading table whilst sitting in bed. It is made using upcycled Birchwood and has a beautiful natural finish. The desk’s dimensions are 720mm x 620mm x 240mm, with a weight of just 7,80 Kg.

Special features include:

  • Upcycled

  • Foldable for easy storage

  • Portable for easy transportation

  • Magnetic catches keep legs secure whilst in storage

  • Africa shape fits naturally around the body

  • Sealed with clear, water-based varnish

So, what makes the My Africa Lap Desk a one-of-a-kind product, totally original design, and exclusive to Lilly Loompa? It is made with upcycled Birchwood and because of the natural shape of the African continent, it is ergonomically designed to fit around your body. It is also totally foldable and portable. All the Lilly Loompa Creative range of  products carry a story, and this one is a story of HOPE! During the height of a pandemic, a new idea was born - an idea and design that is allowing the company to explore new territories and markets.”

Lizl says of her aspirations for the new product:

“Africa is the cradle of humankind, and people all over the world are fascinated by our continent. Although we are ravished with poverty and many social ills, we are a continent of hope and love. We have the most beautiful natural wonders and wildlife and the African map-shape is the source of inspiration to many people around the world. I would like this product to inspire and reach people around the globe. It is a universal aid to assist entrepreneurs, teachers, students and anyone working from home. Every time you use this beautiful piece of furniture, I ask that you consider your work you do, and how it impacts our beautiful continent. Does your work favour our home, does it bring solutions to our continent? In that way we create a daily awareness of our beautiful home.

Lizl provides her bigger wish for those who buy and use the My Africa Lap Desk:

“Africa is a source of inspiration! Our continent is bursting with potential and beauty! Every time you use this beautiful lap desk, I ask that you consider the work you do on it, and how it impacts our beautiful continent. Whether you're reading, writing or submitting a thesis, does your work favour the Motherland? Does it bring solutions to our continent? In this way we create a daily awareness of our beautiful home.”
