The wonderful, crazy city buzz is a place that energizes most of us, whether it’s New York, London, Milan, or Jozi, and many more cities in Africa. High tempo, people doing their things, and life goes on and on and on… Very much similar to an ant city.
In an ant city, there is not a moment of rest for the workers. It is of utmost importance that the Queen is happy, that her offspring is looked after and that the new young ones are taught what makes you a good ant. Food soldiers are out and about daily to fetch and stock up food for any given season. These guys are so organized. Have you watched how teamwork runs in unity when they have discovered a huge meal? Man, these ants are relentless! Survival, planning for the future, ensuring a future for their city….. that is what their total objective in life is about.
If you are the Queen- and your ant city is your business, what exactly can you do to help them…. seriously, aren’t you just there to produce? Maybe so, but here are a few very important issues to consider and ponder on:
If anything should happen to me, who is the next Queen?
Have we discussed real succession planning? In my world I work weekly with big business people who did not! To figure out the profit sharing is a nightmare without paperwork…
What legacy plan and estate plan has been put in place?
Am I considering how hard they work to produce the energy that makes this company run like clockwork?
Would you protect them like they protect you?
Most of all are you transferring skills to the next generation?
The skill that is the most neglected is the Financial Savvy of how to effectively run a great business.
Make sure that you don’t act too much like a Queen, consider how to offer new horizons for the young, and teach and train them. Show them how to create a financially sustainable new ant city…. In the end you will be remembered as the great African Queen. That is leaving a legacy .
