Tigui Traoré - The startup story of a visionary Guinean fashionpreneur elevating Afrochic to a whole new level

May 25, 2015 Melanie Hawken
Tigui Traoré (L), founder of Cocostyle (Guinea)

[The French version of this article is available below.]

A creative explosion of colour, textures and designs, inspired by deep African roots but acknowledging European fashion trends, is at the heart of Tigui Traoré’s inspirational Cocostyle fashion and events brand from Guinea.

This month, LoA found out more about Tigui Traoré’s unique design style and energetic outlook on life.

Tell us a little about your entrepreneurial journey and your fashion business, Cocostyle.

My name is Tiguidanké Macauley Traoré, but my nickname is Tigui - Macauley is my married name. As well as being a fashionpreneur, I am a mom to two little treasures. I was born in a postcard setting in the town of Fria Guinea - I am of Belgian Guinean origin, but I have Senegal and Belgium running through my veins. As a graduate of the journalism school (ISSIC) in Dakar in 2003, I studied social communication and business, but it was in a houseboat in uptown Liege that my creative dream ‘vogueuse' event began.

I am the founder of the fashion and creative events label, Cocostyle, and my corporate structure organizes thematic fashion events with a cultural character that represent the current Afropolitan trend. My entrepreneurial success has been quite immediate - Cocostyle presents what has been a previously neglected chic look, but retains some unusual and ethnic attitudes that reflect my highly visible African origins in my colourful creations. My multi cultural events and my choice of models of all colours, therefore present a unifying concept, reconciling the races more than ever instead of highlighting our differences.

"The Cocostyle universe is so much more than a label, it is a unifying concept that breaks all the clichés and represents the more quirky and colourful side of fashion."

What inspired you to start your company?

Pure juice Africa - a desire to work with colour, to ignore traditional codes, to get caught up in a frenzy of details, and always to apply a sense of irony - plus, my thirst for freedom together with my desire to make fashion creativity. While my journey has not been without its pitfalls, because it's an entrepreneurial journey that arouses much envy and competition, and to create a space for myself in the marketplace, it has been necessary to constantly innovate. My ability has always been to anticipate the trends and to utilise my strong roots. As a result, the Cocostyle universe is so much more than a label, it is a unifying concept that breaks all the clichés and represents the more quirky and colourful side of fashion.

What makes Cocostyle unique and what would appeal to customers?

Cocostyle Solidaire is primarily a mode that is a fusion of colours in each of the highly colourful pieces and collections created, reminding the world of colourful fashion shows that reconcile the races through the choice of models and the cultural fashion events staged using multicultural themes and valued artisanal handicrafts.

"Cocostyle, through our creations and events, will raise positive awareness of Africa and promote our artistic assets and integrity."

Tell us a little about your team at Cocostyle

I have a dream team, a real saga of modern times! My husband is my photographer, my brother is my personal manager who takes care of us and finds new markets and networking opportunities using his experience as a former professional sportsman, and my sister who I use as both a model and an artisan as she is gifted with creativity and imagination and with a fine arts background.  Mix all these ingredients together with two special women who assist me as caregivers, providing specialist sewing and other services.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

It was in a houseboat in uptown Belgium that my journey to become a dream Creator/vogueuse/fashionpreneur began. The characters that have influenced me most in my life are my parents who have shaped my childhood and have been the mainstay of my adventure as a fashionpreneur. I grew up constantly hearing the words “You'll go far our daughter, we are almost certain! You are ready to win.” I had very savvy parents who were able to pass on to me inexhaustible values hat meant I could not do anything but work hard and succeed! It was predestined with working parents. My mother always had all sorts of small shops to make ends meet and God knows we needed it with 7 girls in Africa to feed and to instil our family values.  My mother was a real inspiration.

"The real satisfaction I get is when I can give free rein to my imagination, and that makes my job my greatest freedom."

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

To be competitive internationally by offering distinguished services and products globally. Also for Cocostyle to be an inspirational company and brand and to talk about Africa in a different and positive way, instead of the global focus on the continent’s challenges with diseases and other social scourges. Cocostyle, through our creations and events, will raise positive awareness of Africa and promote our artistic assets and integrity. We would also like to see Africa putting women at the centre of culture as a development driver for future generations. Another aspiration for the business is to see and concept Cocostyle stores in all major cities in Africa, and to work and collaborate with artists, artisans, and designers who do not usually mingle as a way of promoting exchanges, creating long-term relationships and lasting partnerships.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Being a visionary and being bold - the real satisfaction I get is when I can give free rein to my imagination and that makes my job my greatest freedom. In addition, improving the situation of Women in Africa gives me such a desire to create a positive place for them on our little blue planet. Every time my mother told me that she would have done exactly like me at my age, if am filled with a desire to go even higher to the moon, because the only difference between us is that I have been able to evolve in a world of opportunities.

I am glad that this opportunity has come to me from Africa, because when you read the business newspapers, you know that finally Africa is fashionable because it mode. Being fashionable does not mean simply wearing the latest collection pieces from a great designer, but undoubtedly the positivity of Africa passes through the designs, through the mode. I have told you that I have a visionary flair for identifying upcoming trends, and therefore I believe that Africa has not yet finished being fashionable. It is my role as a fashionpreneur to monitor these trends and make them my fight!

For this we must invest in women. African women work a lot and I mean those that are in the shadows yet in turn make us heroes - they are our mothers who rise at dawn to attend to income-generating activities in the formal and informal sectors. Yet, these thousands of women hands are often victims of violence and discrimination, and are ignored by the political environment. However, many progressive women with leadership skills have proved that the future of a people inevitably involves the woman as a cradle of humanity, and that the people who have realized this are at the centre of globalization.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up in business?

Turn off your TV, turn on your computer, then jump with both feet into an adventure and do not go where the path may lead - instead go where there is no path and leave a trace. This is the secret of my life. Enter no existing mould, do what you love, and dream, because everything begins with a dream!

What does your company do?

What inspired you to start your company?

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Tell us a little about your team

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?
