What does your company do?

We are a Mozambican architecture firm founded in 2012 by Tamara Bhatt and Pedro Tomás.

“We believe that through the production of quality design, significant improvements can be achieved in the quality of life of users.”

What inspired you to start your company?

The company arose from the desire to conceive and idealize independent projects. We believe that through the production of quality design, significant improvements can be achieved in the quality of life of users. This contribution to improving the user's experiences, perception, and daily life of each of the projects carried out makes our team extremely proud.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

We exceed our customers' expectations with personalized, intelligent and innovative solutions that, through design, add value and provide the best experience in the materialization of their objectives. Our mission is also to contribute, as best we can, to publicizing the specific duties of our professional class, ensuring that the general public is able to access quality professional services with the necessary level of specialization.

Tell us a little about your team

We are a young and dynamic team, mostly female. There is a common focus on providing quality services and above all with professional ethics.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

My professional career started in Lisbon, where I worked in 2 architecture offices and where I acquired a lot of experience in the first 5 years of my career. I returned to Mozambique in 2011 and together with the Architect Pedro Tomás we started our ATELIER, starting with housing projects. After 6 years, now with 4 collaborators, we joined efforts, in some larger projects, with José Forjaz Arquitectos. We carried out urban plans for the cities of Nampula, Ilha de Moçambique and Beira and based on this synergy, we culminated in a process of merging our teams. We are currently in the process of creating this new company that will soon be announced and will have 10 architects, plus administrative and support staff.

“Our mission is also to contribute, as best we can, to publicizing the specific duties of our professional class, ensuring that the general public is able to access quality professional services with the necessary level of specialization.”

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

With the new route that lies ahead, we intend to be the best architectural company in the country, guided by our professional ethics, with the intention of influencing and improving the architectural and urban planning practices that are practiced in our country, with an impact on policies related to land use planning and civil construction.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Having autonomy to make decisions and being able to employ other women and contribute to improving their lives.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Maintaining focus and determination, establishing clear objectives and above all having pleasure and love for what you do, is essential to follow this path. These principles will help to overcome obstacles and difficulties. You don't need to do everything alone and seek help when necessary and you will find that there is a network of people ready to help.

Why LoA loves it…

There are three big reasons why we love Tamara Bhatt’s story of building Atelier in Mozambique. Firstly, because she started out on her entrepreneurial journey with a big vision and she is now seeing it come to fruition after years of hard work and dedication. Secondly, she wants to make a difference to her industry and country by creating a best practice example for others to follow, and also influencing and improving the architectural and urban planning practices in the country. Thirdly, she is passionate about empowering other women to follow their careers in the architectural industry, and is creating pathways for the next generation to make their mark too. Truly inspirational! — Melanie Hawken, founder & ceo, Lionesses of Africa
