Leocádia Yurca Chau, a Mozambican environmental impact and sustainability change-maker

April 29, 2023 Melanie Hawken

Leocádia Yurca Chau, founder of Ecoplus Mozambique, Lda

Startup Story

Leocádia Yurca Chau is the founder of Ecoplus Mozambique, Lda, a business which operates in the environmental, agribusiness and provider of training and consultancy services with the aim of providing innovative solutions to the market in which it operates, through the use of work tools that produce superior gains to the investment made by the customer or partner. Since its creation in 2020, Ecoplus Mozambique has tried to become a leading SME of excellence in the services it provides, and with extensive experience in the design and implementation of Environmental and Business Sustainability projects. The business has created 5 jobs.

Leocádia studied  Environmental Management at the Catholic University of Mozambique and was a student of the Environmental Engineering course at the University of Coimbra Portugal. She has qualifications in areas related to environmental policies, design and implementation of projects and strategies for environmental and business sustainability, an area in which she has been working since 2021. She also has a certification in Notions of Business Management.

LoA spoke to the inspirational Leocádia Yurca Chau about her entrepreneurial journey and her impact aspirations for the future.

“I always wanted to be a great businesswoman since I was a little girl, but I wasn't sure in what area I would work in, not least because I didn't understand exactly what it really meant to be a businesswoman, but the feeling was there.”

What does your company do?

Ecoplus Mozambique, Lda, is a company in the environmental and agribusiness sector and provider of training and consultancy services with the aim of providing innovative solutions to its market, through the use of work tools that produce gains greater than the investment made by the client or partner.

What inspired you to start your company?

Life is not always a bed of roses; I've been through a lot to be here fighting for a place in the business world. When I was 18, I went to college in Portugal to study Environmental Engineering. I had good and bad experiences because I had to be a student and at the same time work full time to pay my bills. But I am grateful for all my experiences because they reinforced my dream as a girl of owning a business, working in something that fills my soul and heart and being able to help people develop their professional skills by adding value to our country.

When the pandemic hit, I lost my job and went into depression, so I decided to do research on agriculture and I found that my country is very rich and has a lot of potential to develop this type of business, so I wrote down my idea and since that day I realized that I found out how I am going to do this, “becoming an Entrepreneur”.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Ecoplus Mozambique, Lda, has a dynamic and multidisciplinary team of specialists with solid know-how and experience in project development and management, as well as technical expertise in environmental engineering, aquaculture, circular economy, occupational health and safety. But above all, people who believe that in community it is possible to make a difference from the exploration of all knowledge.

“I remember joking with friends about me being the owner of a company and imitated personalities from movies, series and cartoons.”

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Well, my first contact with entrepreneurship started when I was only 16 years old, because of the need to become financially independent, I started selling creams and some beauty products, which somehow was very successful. it was the fact that my parents always wanted me to prioritize school and sport, which is why I had to leave this business. Later I sold clothes, because when I was in Portugal some friends and family were interested in having clothes from some brands that in Portugal were relatively cheaper than in Mozambique. But I realized over time that that was not what would complete me, however I focused on other activities, until the moment I opened Ecoplus, a company that I have been working with since 2020.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

Ecoplus Mozambique’s main objective is to become a leading medium company of excellence in the services it provides, providing superior experience in environmental consulting and sustainability in agribusiness projects, promoting innovative solutions for the prevention of socio-environmental risks, maximizing the investments made by our partners and customers.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

My main motivation is to be able to show that a well-oriented woman can have beneficial results in the development of a country's economy. Therefore, I dedicate a good part of my time to reading and activities that can positively stimulate my brain.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Seek knowledge to better deal with your weaknesses, and never be afraid to throw everything up to chase a big dream.
