Dirce Abdala, founder of D-Fruit (Mozambique)

Being inspired by Mozambique’s wonderful array of fresh fruit led to the creation of an added-value enterprise, D-Fruit, founded by Dirce Abdala. Today she is extending the value of the fruit by producing healthy snacks that celebrate the raw ingredients but in a convenient, eat at any time, form.

LoA met with Dirce Abdala at the recent Lioness Lean In event in Mozambique to find out more.

What does your company do?

We produce dried fruit made from pineapple, banana, mango and apples, as well as banana and sweet potato flour.

What inspired you to start your company?

The idea of starting to produce dried fruit came when I was living with my grandmother, who was a small producer of fruits and vegetables. However, much of her produce rotted. This affected the income of our household, and there were days when we were hungry and we did not have clothes to go to school. The difficulties were great. I grew up, but my concern in solving the problem of my grandmother's house remained, that's when I started to make the dried fruit with a small machine and sold it to my colleagues. However, they asked for more and sometimes we were unable to meet the needs of our customers. We are in the process of prototyping the product for about 6 months.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Our products are perfect for people who are looking to adopt a healthy lifestyle, as our products are without additives, without preservatives, and without dyes, 100% natural. With this new dried fruit product offering, D-Fruit gives small producers and fruit collectors income opportunities, contributing to the improvement of the agricultural ecosystem. Whoever consumes our products is also helping a small producer in Mozambique to have a source of income and consequently to improve the lives of their families.

Tell us a little about your team

My team is mostly women, because we believe that empowering women is contributing to a better society. We try to accommodate their family needs with the benefits in the company.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

I hold a degree in Human Resource Management and Entrepreneurship and completed the Incubated Acceleration Programme in Orange Corners, Maputo when I was a 25-year-old Mozambican woman. I believe that faith in God, the demand to  be perfect every day, and your will power, are the characteristics that distinguish you.

I completed my degree in 2015 at the age of 20, with the nomination of the best student in my college, and because of this, integration in the labor market was not difficult. I worked in a bank for 4 years in the area of human resources and later in the area of business development, always looking for the best performances. But it was not always possible. By 2017 my performance rating dropped from 96 to 86, minus 10 points, on a scale of 1 to 100. At this point in the worst stage of my professional life, I decided to develop an idea that I already had in mind for a long time, solve the waste problem of my grandmothers produce. This was the inspiration for starting D-Fruit.

Entrepreneurship had always been a second choice for me, a simple short cut to meet immediate needs. But today entrepreneurship represents my only option and is the purpose of my life. As I have always liked high performances, I embraced D-Fruit 100%, leaving behind all other alternatives that fate had given me and rewrote my own destiny.

“Whoever consumes our products is also helping a small producer in Mozambique to have a source of income and consequently to improve the lives of their families.”

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

Our biggest goal is to increase our production capacity, and to start producing dehydrated fruit and malambe fruit flours with biological certification for export to the European Union. Our vision is to improve the ecosystem of small producers by including them on a large scale in our value chain.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

My greatest satisfaction in the entrepreneurial journey is to inspire people to follow their dreams.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Stop making excuses, start with your idea as it is, and with the conditions that exist. Remember that what seems great today was once small. It is important to have a vision that you want to reach.

Why LoA loves it….

It is always so inspirational to hear the stories of women such as Dirce Abdala who want to make a difference to the lives of their families and their communities through their businesses. With the creation of D-Fruit, Dirce found a powerful way to both create income for her own family, whilst at the same time providing opportunities for other local women to be part of the value chain and giving them access to income generation. D-Fruit is producing world-class products that celebrate the best of Mozambique’s natural resources that excite customers and support the community. --- Melanie Hawken, founder and editor-in-chief of Lionesses of Africa

PORTUGUESE VERSION

As dificuldades eram grandes.

Sempre procurando obter as melhores perfomances.
