Rofiat Komolafe, a Nigerian fashion entrepreneur building a global brand

March 17, 2024 Melanie Hawken

Rofiat Komolafe, founder, ROFEEA K (Nigeria)

Startup Story

Rofiat Komolafe is the Nigerian founder of the international fashion brand, ROFEEA K, a business that blends African and Western styles in a sizzling showcase. As the proud owner of a sourcing and apparel production business that has been transforming designers’ dreams into reality since 2013, she has built a client list both at home and abroad. Rofiat is living proof that dedication and determination can make dreams come true. Rofiat’s fashion journey began with a simple blog and personal shopping business when she moved to the USA, which quickly opened the door to her passion for fashion design. With her savvy business skills, she was able to explore different sectors of the fashion industry to build her business. Rofiat is also a big believer in giving back to the community and empowering people by creating jobs and now employs 12 people.

LoA spoke to Rofiat Komolafe about her entrepreneurial journey and her ambitions for the future.

Tell us about your business

ROFEEA K is a contemporary brand that includes a combination of traditional African design with a touch of Western style. We are a fast-growing apparel sourcing and production company with clients both at home and abroad.

“My love for fashion prompted me to start a fashion business. I loved the concept of “bringing thoughts or sketches to life”. Doing this became therapeutic, and it led me to start my company.”

“I grew up around women in the fashion business. My great-grandmother started a fabric business, and it was passed down from one generation to the next.”

What inspired you to start your company?

My love for fashion prompted me to start a fashion business. I loved the concept of “bringing thoughts or sketches to life”. Doing this became therapeutic, and it led me to start my company.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

The fact that I love what I do. I feel one should express themselves through what they wear. That is why my designs and work are impeccable.

Tell us a little about your team:

We have a dedicated team. Our team consists of a production manager, cutters, tailors, quality controllers and a logistics officer. We also have part-time staff.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

I grew up around women in the fashion business. My great-grandmother started a fabric business, and it was passed down from one generation to the next. I realized I was good at putting outfits together and I got compliments. When I moved to the United States, I decided to create a blog where l posted styles and outfits of the day. I also started my personal shopping business. Along the way, I fell in love with fashion design. My Dad bought me my first sewing machine when I told him I was interested in tailoring. I had the support of my family and that meant so much to me.

I have had difficult times, but the love of what I do keeps me going. I also learn from every mistake.

“I want my brand to be a household name, known for timeless pieces. My aim is to build a fashion empire and give back to the community.”

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

I want my brand to be a household name, known for timeless pieces. My aim is to build a fashion empire and give back to the community.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

The freedom and love I get from doing what I love motivates me. The contentment I get when I see people wear my designs, and the fact that I get to empower people while pursuing my journey as an entrepreneur makes me satisfied.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Do not get discouraged because of what you have at the moment. Start somewhere, no matter how little. With hard work and patience, you will surely achieve your dreams.

Why LoA loves it…

The fashion business is notoriously tough, and finding your niche is key. For Rofiat Komolafe, that means building a contemporary brand that includes a combination of traditional African design with a touch of Western style. As a result, she is connecting with both local and global customers, expanding her brand reach. Rofiat’s commitment to job creation is also great to see as she looks to create opportunities in local communities through her business success. — Melanie Hawken, founder & ceo, Lionesses of Africa
