Mercia Bie, a Mozambican entrepreneur on a mission to bring natural flavours to her customers’ cuisines

December 14, 2024 Melanie Hawken

Mercia Bie, founder, Sabor Caseiro 2A (Mozambique)

Startup Story

Mercia Bie, founder of Sabor Caseiro 2A in Mozambique is building an agri-processing business where each seasoning tells a story and each dish is an experience. Her mission is to bring natural flavor and authenticity to customers' tables, whether at home or at special events. Mercia’s vision is to create a line of seasonings that not only enhance the flavor of dishes, but also make a nutritional contribution to our lives. The company’s brand values focus on ethics and transparency, appreciation and involvement in human capital, respect and trust in customers.

LoA spoke to Mercia Bie about her entrepreneurial journey, her unique product lines, and her aspirations for the future.

What does your company do?

Sabor Caseiro 2A was founded in 2018 in Mozambique by me, Mercia Bié, mother of three children, married and servant of God, and I have been passionate about cooking since I was little. Initially, we were not exposed to the market due to the lack of experience with the seasonings themselves, but in 2020, with more focus and some acceptance, Sabor Caseiro 2A launched its brand on National Television. Talking about the origins of this brand takes me back to my childhood, where every Sunday I was assigned to help my older sister, Angela. My job was seasoning and grilling, and I always learned the secrets of international seasonings that transformed simple dishes into true masterpieces. It is important to highlight that she had an enviable experience in international cuisine, from French to Latin and so on. I also learned the national dishes from my mother and she had experience in Indian cuisine because her descendants were Indians. The techniques for each dish were not easy; with my mom I had to be very focused so as not to make mistakes. For example, about 16 years ago I learned the matapa techniques and never made a mistake when making it again. I am grateful to these great women who decided to share their family recipes. My seasoning mixes were inspired by the techniques I learned throughout my growth and also by the desire I had to know each herb, its function, properties, and how it should be used. One of our first successes was the "Natural Herbal Salt" seasoning, a special mixture that combines fresh herbs and spices, ideal for any grill or stew.

“It is a source of pride when we start to place our products in different parts of the world.”

“We are honored to distribute our products to Portugal, Brazil, Spain, USA and every corner of Mozambique, and this recognition solidifies our position in the market.”

What inspired you to start your company?

After managing my firstborn, I became overweight which led me to request help from a nutritionist to correct the situation. I received some recipes for natural seasonings that would help with my metabolism, weight loss, and reducing the use of seasonings with lots of preservatives. Over time, I realized that many people had difficulty finding fresh and natural seasonings in the market. Most of the products available were full of preservatives and additives or priced too high, which made me think, "Why not create something different?” About five years ago, I had the privilege of participating in a service where the Man of God, Ap. Izrra, prophesied that I would become a renowned chef in the square. At that moment, I thought it was strange, as I have a degree in Business Management and, at the time, I worked as an Administrative and Creditor in a multinational company. I didn't realize the meaning of this until one fine night, when a bit of curiosity bit me and I had an idea: I started producing seasonings for different types of meat. I thought it was beautiful because I started using the seasonings and gave them to my sisters to test. It was kind of strange, but there was something magical about it. I started testing recipes at home, mixing herbs and spices that I grew in my small garden. It was a challenging period, but also very rewarding, as each mixture I created brought back new memories of my childhood. At the beginning of 2020, I had the privilege of selling my products at a vegetable market, where they were only displayed on Saturdays and Sundays. After three months, I managed to make my first sale to a supermarket called Pôr do Sol, which didn't believe in my product (the manager knew the products and was fascinated with what I offered). As time went by, at the end of 2020, I managed to take my products to a program called "Belas Manhãs", where I was able to present them on a national and international level.

We realized that our line of seasonings had a good market and also with Chef Rogerio's teachings on techniques, and of course not forgetting the BABA I had when I was little, I entered the world of catering in the first phase providing food to order for special dates, then providing training to home secretaries on how to transform their kitchen into a small restaurant. This is how we established ourselves in catering and the growing demand for catering services and we decided to incorporate this into our business. Today, we cater to events such as weddings, corporate parties and birthdays with personalized menus that highlight our spices. In 2023 we were given a challenge to train chefs at a Sun Flower Restaurant located in Matola, which we accepted and it was a success, and at that time we explored a take-away in the city center which was a success. For reasons of personal management, we had to close and pursue new challenges.
