LIONESS WEEKENDER COVER STORY

Bright Idea Projects 2100 T/A Function Foods - Thembela Venue, a leading hospitality company and unique event venue in South Africa

At Thembela Venue in South Africa, the philosophy that true growth comes from stepping out of the comfort zone and into challenges which inspires greatness, and it is this philosophy that drove founder, Cecilia Birkenstock, to pursue her lifelong dream - of creating a unique venue on the North coast in KZN in South Africa. Recognizing a need for exceptional event spaces in the area, she set out to fill this gap with elegance and innovation. Cecilia is the founder and CEO of Functionfoods, and brings three decades of experience in hospitality to her business. With this wealth of experience, Cecilia embarked on her most exciting venture yet - establishing Thembela Venue. Thembela Venue is the culmination of Cecilia's dream. Through her dedication, innovation and clear vision, she has transformed her dream into a reality. Patrons place their trust in Cecilia and her team, confident in their ability to turn dream weddings into stunning realities. Cecilia's commitment to excellence ensures that every celebration reflects her client's vision, making Thembela Venue the ideal choice for unforgettable experiences where dreams truly come to life. The business, which was launched in 2008 has created jobs for 30 people.

Lioness Weekender spoke to the visionary founder, Cecilia Birkenstock, to learn more about her passion for hospitality and eventing, and also her dedication to turning her clients’ event dreams into reality.

What does your company do?

Thembela Venue is an exceptional event company and space located on the North Coast KZN in South Africa, between Empangeni and Richards Bay, designed to accommodate various celebrations, including weddings, corporate events, and special occasions. Thembela Venue offers customizable spaces, personalized service, and a dedication to turning clients' visions into reality, making every event a memorable experience. The business offers an array of products and services ranging from fresh flowers, table decor, delicious food, gifts and accommodation.

What inspired you to start your company?

After successfully managing catering projects in hospitals, schools and canteens, I choose to pivot my focus toward functions and events where I could fully embrace my true passion for food. I find joy in expressing my creativity by curating themed menus tailored to my customers' needs. I thrive in the dynamic environment where every day brings new challenges and ever-evolving customer preferences. There is no substitute for the rush of satisfaction that comes from a happy customer - it's a feeling that no pill could replicate! After 25 years of mobile catering and events, we managed to build our own Dream Venue called Thembela Venue.

What makes your business, service or product special?

Thembela Venue is where flowers flourish and love grows. Thembela Venue offers a setting of unparalleled beauty and tranquility. Thembela means "to believe in or trust in" and it is this foundation of faith and confidence that we bring to every event. Here the power of everlasting love is captured in a breathtaking environment, ensuring your ceremony is truly unforgettable. Let us help you create cherished memories that will last a lifetime. We are the epitome of quality and service. Our exquisite venue provides a picturesque backdrop for weddings, celebrations and events of all kinds. In addition to our stunning venue, Thembela is proud to offer exceptional catering services, ensuring that your guests are treated to a culinary experience that compliments the beauty of the occasion.

Tell us a little about your team

Our team is committed to ensuring that every detail of an event is seamlessly executed, leaving you free to savor each moment. With a passion for food and a keen eye for perfection, we strive to create an atmosphere that reflects your unique style and vision. 70% of our team started with the company in 2008, and together we have built our own dream Venue called Thembela Venue.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

I grew up with my granny who made me believe that I can be successful in anything that I do, once I set my mind to it. Starting my own catering company with no business management knowledge was not easy.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

Future plans are to complete the development of the Thembela Boutique Hotel and Venue. The focus for the next 5 years will be to build a dream team to match the excellent service delivery and rapid growth of the company in the event space.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

My personal growth - through the years I have had to learn new skills, ie:
1. become the accountant
2. become the marketer
3. become the sales manager
4. become the creative director
I was challenged in my business which then forced me to develop the above skills in a very short period of time.
Every day is a new day and Learning never ends.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Turn the famous NO word into a YES opportunity or the next opportunity. Use the no’s as stepping stones to build your business.

Take these 3 steps to ensure success:
1. make sure you get paid
2. make sure you get paid at the right price
3. never lower your price or discount your price - rather increase your price
4. build your story, people buy from stories, they buy momentum more than they buy products
