LoA spoke to Karina Jamal to find out more.

What does your company do?

Koko Boxes Lda provides biodegradable and environmentally friendly packaging made from sugarcane bagasse, recycled paper and corn starch.

O que faz a sua empresa?

A Koko Boxes Lda, fornece embalagens Biodegradaveis e amigas do ambiente, feitas de bagaço de cana-de-açucar, papel reciclado e amido de milho.

“I would like Koko Boxes to one day be one of the biggest factories supplying biodegradable packaging and we could also be one of the biggest exporters from Mozambique to the world.”

What inspired you to start your company?

I always wanted to sell a product that was disposable, that people needed every day but that was easy to dispose of and preferably not causing pollution. So, I thought about changing the entire line of products to a greener, less polluting concept that would cause less damage to the environment.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

1. It helps preserve the environment

2. It reduces the environmental impact

3.Some biodegradable products, such as cleaning and personal care products, may be safer for human health. Especially take away packaging, which is less harmful than the use of polystyrene.

1. Ajuda a preservar o meio ambiente
2. Reduz o impacto ambiental

“We manage to raise awareness of more and more people to adhere to better quality consumption for health and the environment with the use of our products and that makes them happier with a clear conscience.”

Tell us a little about your team

My team is made up of a purchasing and warehouse manager, a commercial manager, an accountant, a social media manager, two operators and a courier. I have created more and more conditions for women to be at the forefront of every process that makes the company grow.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Before founding Koko Boxes, I only sold books written by myself. I always liked the fact that I could work independently.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

I would like Koko Boxes to one day be one of the biggest factories supplying biodegradable packaging and we could also be one of the biggest exporters from Mozambique to the world.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

When we manage to raise awareness of more and more people to adhere to better quality consumption for health and the environment with the use of our products and that makes them happier with a clear conscience.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

The biggest advice is not to give up. If there is an idea in your head, it is possible to achieve it, especially if that idea contributes positively to the world.

Why LoA loves it…

There is so much more awareness now about the need to find more sustainable, more environmentally friendly forms of packaging in our businesses and lives. This challenge inspired Karina Jamal, founder of Koko Boxes in Mozambique to find a business solution. Today, her Koko Boxes provide biodegradable and environmentally friendly packaging alternative solutions, all made from sugarcane bagasse, recycled paper and corn starch. Karina is making a difference with her sustainable business and providing Mozambican customers with the products they need to think and act greener with their packaging choices. — Melanie Hawken, founder & ceo, Lionesses of Africa
