South African leading sustainable luxury product design brand, The Joinery, strikes gold at the Eco-Logical Awards

November 19, 2023 Melanie Hawken

Awards & Accolades

The South African sustainable luxury product design brand, The Joinery, based in the Cape Winelands and founded by Natalie and Kim Ellis, has just been recognised as a gold award winner at the Eco-Logical Awards. The brand picked up the Gold Eco-Logic Award in the Eco-Fashion and Lifestyle category, sponsored by Pick n’ Pay Clothing. This latest accolade is a testament to the Joinery team’s unwavering commitment to sustainability. Renowned for its beautifully designed range of sustainable products, use of responsible fabrics, and ethical production, The Joinery has won fans around the world for many years for its passionate belief in being kind to our planet and fair to our people, one plastic bottle at a time.

The Joinery is a sustainable and ethical product design brand based in South Africa with a focus on finding solutions to environmental and community issues through design. The brand creates luxury products made from recycled plastic bottles, demonstrating that it’s possible to potential waste into something positive. For co-founders Kim and Natalie Ellis, their intense concern for the issue of plastic waste and single use plastic landing up in our oceans and landfills fuelled them to find solutions to this pressing issue through sustainable textile innovation. They approached local fibre recyclers who helped them on our journey to conceptualising a felt fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. All of the plastic bottles that go into The Joinery’s recycled fabric are collected from around South Africa. The Joinery is on HALF A MILLION plastic bottles saved from landfills and our oceans to date and are on a journey to reach ONE MILLION in the near future.

Speaking about the award win, Natalie and Kim said: “We’re thrilled to share the joyous news! The Joinery has been awarded the Gold Eco-Logic Award in the Eco-Fashion and Lifestyle category. This accolade is a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainability. A heartfelt thanks to the Eco-Logic Awards and their sponsors for recognizing our efforts toward a greener, more conscious future.”

All of The Joinery products are made by local sewing co-operatives in the informal settlements of South Africa, by up-skilled artisans and by sustainable production houses, contributing directly to job creation. The Joinery's seamstresses work with heart and soul to produce its high end eco products. The Joinery is on a journey to ensure that all of its processes are as sustainable as possible from beginning to end, from its  recycled fabrics, through to its sustainable packaging, donating offcuts to NGO’s and offsetting the brand’s carbon footprint.

The Joinery is committed to empowering people and our planet and invites its customers to join them on a journey to create change, together.
