Isabel Resende, a Mozambican entrepreneur turning a passion for people and gardening into business

October 30, 2022 Melanie Hawken

Isabel Resende, partner and Managing Director, Control Plus Services, Limitada (Mozambique)

Startup Story

Isabel Resende is a partner and Managing Director of Control Plus Services, Limitada, a Mozambican company dedicated to the provision of gardening services and pest control. It is composed of 10 employees, based in Maputo City, and has representatives in the central and northern areas of the country. She holds a law degree and a master's degree in Business Management. Her journey as an entrepreneur began in 2021, however, she has more than 10 years of experience in the job market.

LoA spoke to Isabel this month to find out more about her business and her ambitions for the future.

What does your company do?

We provide pest control and gardening services.

Prestamos serviços de controlo de pragas e jardinagem.

What inspired you to start your company?

My current partner and I had already talked several times about the possibility of this partnership, but I had other professional commitments and could not accept the invitation at the time. In 2016, I started the master's course in business management and I fell in love with content related to Human Resource Management. The passion grew so much that I started thinking about turning it into work. Thus, a great desire was born to work on something that would allow me to manage people and help them in their professional and personal development, which would also contribute to my own development and for me to explore more of my potential. I am an extremely shy person and running a business requires me to be in constant contact with people and sometimes to speak in public, which is a great challenge for me. In short, what inspired me the most were people and the possibility of creating a positive impact in their lives. Another inspiring factor for me was the possibility of being able to contribute with my own hands and with my own work to the construction, consolidation and growth of a business through which we provide services that serve as a reference in our area of activity.

“Our services are provided based on 3 main foundations - professionalism and commitment and quality - and I believe that this will certainly make us stand out in the market.”

“In addition to providing the service requested by the customer, we always try to go a little further, providing a personalized advice service and presenting the innovations that arise in our area of activities.”

What makes your business, service or product special?

Our services are provided based on 3 main foundations - professionalism and commitment and quality - and I believe that this will certainly make us stand out in the market. In addition to providing the service requested by the customer, we always try to go a little further, providing a personalized advice service and presenting the innovations that arise in our area of activities. In this way, the customer can be sure we are in control of everything and will take care of their space with care and diligence. Furthermore, we are very concerned about preserving the environment and we only use environmentally friendly pesticides and fertilizers.

Tell us a little about your team

Our team is made up of 10 employees, mostly young people from the local community, motivated, dynamic and committed to the company's cause. Here we are more than co-workers, we are a family always willing to share knowledge, experiences and cultivate the spirit of mutual help, always keeping in mind our main objective, which is the satisfaction of our customers.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Unfortunately, I don't come from a business/entrepreneurship background, nor did I have someone close to whom I could go for inspiration and gather experiences. On the one hand, I regret this, as its this background which would have allowed me to start with more solid foundations and with a kind of mentor to guide me on this journey. On the other hand, the lack of close examples allows me to walk my own path, make my own choices according to my reality, and develop my ability to resolve the issues I have been facing. It has been a fantastic journey, full of challenges and learning and an experience completely different from anything I have ever lived, which allows me to develop new skills and explore more of my potential.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

We have plans to consolidate and expand our business throughout the country. We intend to be a national and perhaps international reference in the field of pest control and gardening. In addition, we intend to build a team that is increasingly cohesive, motivated and happy to be part of this company.

“It has been a fantastic journey, full of challenges and learning and an experience completely different from anything I have ever lived, which allows me to develop new skills and explore more of my potential.”

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

It is extremely satisfying and encouraging when we know that our work makes a positive impact on clients' lives and transforms their environments. Achieving visible results with my work is a source of great joy for me. Another great satisfaction for me is to contribute to the training of great professionals and to their development at various levels.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

I would give the following advice:

  • Plan ahead, because during your journey you will face various challenges, unforeseen events and situations beyond your control, good planning reduces the risk of suffering impacts that affect our business;

  • Train yourself constantly, only a trained and prepared person will be able to take full advantage of the opportunities that may arise;

  • Work hard, always remember that plans without actions will not bring results, it is necessary to act so that our goals are achieved;

  • Get out of your comfort zone, take risks and be fearless, there is an infinity of opportunities and possibilities to be explored;

  • Be consistent and disciplined, consistency and discipline help us to build good professional and life habits in general.

  • Have a routine and lifestyle aligned with your purpose.

Eu daria os seguintes conselhos:
• Planifiquem-se, pois durante a vossa jornada enfrentarão vários desafios, imprevistos e situações fora do vosso controlo, uma boa planificação diminui o risco de sofrermos impactos que abalem o nosso negócio;
• Capacitem-se constantemente, apenas uma pessoa capacitada e preparada conseguirá tirar o maior proveito possível das oportunidades que possam surgir;
• Trabalhem muito, lembrem-se sempre que planos sem acções não trarão resultados, é necessário agir para que os nossos objectivos sejam alcançados;
