Startup Story

For any business looking to get the best from its people in a rapidly changing digital business environment, help is often needed to develop new skills and expertise. In Cote d’Ivoire, entrepreneur Prudence Seya, founder of Web Training Academy, is making e-learning more accessible.

LoA chatted to founder, Prudence Seya, recently to find out more.

“My ambition is to make available to everyone, the essential tools to become a successful entrepreneur and thus realize their dreams. I think that empowerment will only happen through entrepreneurship.”

What inspired you to start your company?

Coming from a disadvantaged background, and in the face of declining wage labour in recent decades, my ambition is to make available to everyone, the essential tools to become a successful entrepreneur and thus realize their dreams. I think that empowerment will only happen through entrepreneurship.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Web Training Academy has a humane approach that makes learning flexible and accessible to everyone. The modules delivered in various formats are in an easy language with flexible payment methods at unbeatable costs. More than that, through the personalized and regular follow-up, we humanize the training so that each trainee achieves the desired, meaningful results.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Very early as a single mother, I had to stop my University studies to start looking for a job. Without experience and being unskilled I could not hope to win the Holy Grail. First I was a waitress at the Ivory Golf Hotel, where thanks to my sense of responsibility and my language skills I caught the attention of a consortium that had come to solve the Year 2000 software bug. This Canadian computer training company was looking to set up in Africa. I jumped on the opportunity, although not knowing anything about computers or the commercial job, but I was ready to take up the challenge. I had my first clients and organized my first seminar just 3 weeks after starting and in addition with big markets. It was promising. I then had markets in the sub-region, particularly in Lomé and Cotonou. I then took my commissions to buy women's accessories and CD-ROMs that I sold at a high price in the cities. I did this until 2008 and thanks to my income I was able to cover the expenses of my family. Our father had rejected us after divorcing my mother. In 2009, I landed a commercial director position for a company specializing in the sale of computer equipment here in Abidjan. I then started to specialize in home automation for this company and then for myself. The profits that I earned allowed me to start an agro pastoral farm inside, and thanks to the income from that enterprise, I was able to build my first house in Bouafle. I never took a bank loan and never had any financial support. I put back what I earned by living with littleThen in 2010 a crisis broke out, I lost everything in my company based in Abidjan. My farm inside was vandalized. I was losing everything. I was reminded that in Canada I had noticed that a good part of the workforce was self-employed and working from home. This concept pleased me. I started to train in the Web professions. I saw that this could be a solution to unemployment in my country and empower the most disadvantaged people since everything was possible on the Web. I started to attend meetings and training conferences. I then acquired certificates and skills. And now, I teach people who are interested in entrepreneurship, and how to have the right mindset and start a business even without funding and without certification.

Ce concept me plu.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

My ambition is to train and guide 1,000,000 ordinary people, to turn them into successful entrepreneurs by December 2020.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

My satisfaction is to see feedback from my listeners telling me they are successful. Helping and growing others is my greatest source of satisfaction.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

If you are looking for someone who can help you realize your dreams, look in the mirror. Do not be afraid to dare. The further you aim the lower you fall. The faster you dare, the faster you discover the keys to success.

Success is to be happy.

Why LoA loves it….

Some of the most successful women entrepreneurs see a need in the marketplace and build solutions to address that need. For Prudence Seya, she saw a skills gap that required specialist expertise in the digital learning environment, and today she is not only equipping others to fulfill their potential but also taking her own entrepreneurial journey to the next level. — Melanie Hawken, founder & ceo, Lionesses of Africa
