Nandi Usher, an entrepreneur from Botswana making mobile beauty spa treatments accessible to everyone

Every woman wants to look and feel good, but not everyone can travel to a spa. However, in Botswana, one enterprising woman has created a mobile beauty spa experience that is convenient and affordable. Nandi Usher, founder of Nandi’s Beauty Creations, is winning fans with her quality service and products.

LoA chatted to Nandi in Botswana recently to find out more.

What does your company do?

We are a mobile beauty spa offering therapeutic treatments; manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, make-up application and wig constructions. We also sell cosmetics including our own range of nail polishes.

“At Nandi’s Beauty Creations, we supply services that enhance our client's physical appearance and mental relaxation. We promote beauty through happiness.”

What inspired you to start your company?

I was inspired by the stories of women and their entrepreneurial journeys, women who are bosses in their business. It all started out with my mother (Collie Usher), she has been my biggest inspiration to become an entrepreneur and Masego Kunupi (one of the best makeup artist in SA) has inspired me and has been my influence to join the beauty industry.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

We are all souls! We supply services that enhance our client's physical appearance and mental relaxation. We promote beauty through happiness.

Tell us a little about your team

Our team has been specially trained by us to ensure that our visions are aligned. We often do retreats and workshops to make sure that our team is in the best position to provide our clients with great services in a refreshing atmosphere.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

I come from a family of entrepreneurs; from the age of 10 years I was already working as a shop assistant helping my late grandfather at the family business. My mom taught me how to do business plans and proposals at a young age as well, inspiring me to follow her path. In 2015, I got a job as an intern at The Lush Lifestyle where my beauty journey began, here I met and worked with Botswana's great makeup artists including Maxine Magwape. A year later, I went to work for a beauty Spa in Phakalane, The Majestic Day Spa. The lady took us for a training in South Africa where I learned everything I know about business and leadership.

I started Nandi's Beauty Creations in 2016 doing only feet and hand treatments. At that time it was a part-time hustle for me to raise enough money to buy equipment and products to open up my own business. In 2017, I hosted a business shower to launch my business to friends and family, I also used this as a platform to network with new people in different industries and thereafter I registered NBC. I have since expanded our services and now we offer make up, facials, massages, pedicures, manicures, and we also do wigs as well. Last year, in 2018, we launched our first product, a nail polish that is unique. A homemade nail polish created by our manufacturer, Miss Lebo. It is nail polish that is long lasting, rich in colour, and does not contain the 3 toxic chemicals commonly used in nail polishes.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

To be able to provide a refreshing and rejuvenating atmosphere for our clients, and to provide a one stop spa where clients can get therapeutic treatments and products in one place. To start a home brand of Nandi's Beauty Creations nail care, facial range and make-up range. To continue as a brand with purpose in our mission, to providing youth with a platform to empower and inspire them.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

The ability to be an inspiration to young people, becoming women's hope that it is possible to do more with your life and unleash your inner fire.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Failure is not death, if you are taking each day with the determination of being a better you, you will kill it in this life thing. The goal is to be better than the you, better than you were yesterday not better than anyone. Nobody is perfect, don’t stress too much, don't overthink. Money does make your world go around therefore love it, respect it, run after it, spare it and use it wisely. Friends come and go; the right ones always appear in dark times. Live, be happy, love yourself and love those that love you. Be a warrior when it comes to delivering on your ambitions and a saint when it comes to treating people with respect, modelling generosity, and showing up with outright love. Above all Trust God.

Why LoA loves it….

At Lionesses of Africa, we often see enterprising women entrepreneurs who build businesses that respond to market need. That is definitely the case with Nandi Usher. She saw a gap in the market to bring the beauty spa experience directly to women in their homes and communities. As a result, she is growing her business and her product range constantly to respond to her clients’ needs. The recent launch of her own nail polish brand is testimony to her entrepreneurial acumen and her desire to build a genuine growth business that is client centric. — Melanie Hawken, founder & CEO, Lionesses of Africa
