O Medo de Vencer. The Fear of Winning.

January 6, 2019 Melanie Hawken
Fear-of-Winning.jpg

by Nereyda Ah Hoy, writer, author and founder of Indika platform and digital magazine

Failure is one of the greatest fears of the Human Being. But have you ever thought that there are people who are afraid of WINS? The fear of winning is not only a reality, but it is also one of the biggest obstacles to people's success.

Failure is one of the greatest fears of the Human Being. But have you ever thought that there are people who are afraid of WINS? The fear of winning is not only a reality, but it is also one of the biggest obstacles to people's success.

Things like showing off your success can be very scary for some people! Having this fear is natural. The problem is when it becomes recurrent in our life, preventing us from growing and causing self-sabotage! Self-sabotage prevents us taking great opportunities in our lives to shine, and enhances the fears that prevent us from moving on. Unconsciously, it allows us to make "excuses" that validate this fear and that make us feel comfortable for not having advanced further in our lives.

But why are some people so afraid to win? It may be because of low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, or because they have grown up in an environment where they have little motivation to believe in their potential. However, one of the biggest reasons people are afraid of winning is the responsibility that this situation brings! Winning brings with it immense responsibility, in addition to a greater exposure for the person to various situations, which he or she is often unwilling to face!

There are some situations where the fear of winning is a reality. If for example, someone who was financially dependent on someone else has an opportunity to stop being in this situation, the person will probably resist coming out of this situation because it is comfortable to stay the same. And the person will not want to carry with it all the responsibilities inherent in being independent and having to answer for you. If someone was in a professional role and suddenly, because of their performance, has the opportunity to "move up in the race", if this person does not believe that he or she is capable, they will find ways to do something to proves that they really do not have the capacity to be in that position!

If someone has been in a toxic love relationship for so many years and there is someone who demonstrates that life can be happier, the person in fear will do everything to stay in the toxic relationship, for fear of being alone, facing separation, of facing society and betting on a new relationship. They prefer to remain in a toxic relationship because they are accustomed to suffering and being in a comfort zone.

So, what do you need to do to overcome the fear of winning? It all begins with Self-Knowledge! Take time to know yourself and to accept your potential, but also your failures. As you get to know yourself better, you will know how to harness your best skills and always improve where you are not so good. Remember, you were born a winner, you only have to believe in and work on yourself!
