Earlier this year, I made the decision to go back to school to pursue my Master’s degree in Communication Management at the University of Pretoria. I admit that the first 6 months of this journey were challenging. I was focusing on my business, running a youth development programme and concentrating on my studies…it was overwhelming!
There were several moments when I wanted to quit. I underestimated how challenging it would be to get back to school after 4 years of not studying. Many nights I would look at my laptop and hit a blank because I just didn’t know what to write for the endless assignments. The sacrifices were frequent. There were too many sleepless nights, energy drinks, tears and intense choices. In the midst of it all, I never lost sight of my goal, never lost hope, never limited myself, but most importantly, I mastered the art of perseverance.
Last week, I received my academic results and I was filled with shock, excitement and joy, when I realised that I had passed the first semester of my Masters studies with TWO DISTINCTIONS and one B! I am so proud of myself. Beyond all the challenges that I faced this year, results such as these are testimony that with perseverance one can achieve anything one sets one’s mind to.
On a daily basis, I engage with various individuals who are fearful of public speaking. When given an opportunity to present in front of an audience they would rather quit than continue. They are afraid to step out of their comfort zone in order to develop their communication skills and subsequently limit their ability to excel, because they are not willing to persevere.
The reality is, nothing will ever be easy in this world! Whether you are delivering a presentation, starting a new venture or, just like me, going back to school, you will encounter challenges. However, you need to persevere! Always keep your eye on the goal, never lose hope and NEVER LIMIT YOURSELF! You are capable of achieving anything that you set your mind to!
