The top 5 habits of successful entrepreneurs

August 14, 2015 Melanie Hawken

Guest Blog: by Lireko Dorothy Ncube

Have you ever wondered what distinguishes those successful entrepreneurs from everyone else who perhaps has an entrepreneurial idea or dream and aspires to be one, but never actually makes the transition to embarking on that entrepreneurial journey and making the dream a reality? Well, there is no point in having an idea and not putting it into action. Perhaps what is required is a change in approach and the adoption of some of those habits displayed by other successful entrepreneurs.

Here are five of the top habits that can help you take the steps needed to realise those entrepreneurial dreams:

1. Hard Work

There is no short cut to it, entrepreneurial success takes hard work,  energy, determination, and lots of it. If you have an entrepreneurial dream that you are chasing, yet you are not willing to take the plunge needed to put it into action, or are perhaps not willing to work hard and make the sacrifices needed, then you might as well kiss that dream good bye. There is a well-known saying that goes, “build your dreams or someone else will hire you to build theirs.”

2. Dedication

To be successful as an entrepreneur, no matter what the venture, requires absolute commitment and dedication. No matter what the challenges or hurdles along the way, dedication to achieving the vision you have set for yourself with your business venture is essential if you want to make it a reality. No dedication, not results.

3. Drive to Keep Going

Even when it feels like everything is against you, it is essential to keep going. Remember, don’t give up on your dreams no matter what the challenges or hurdles you face.  Winston Churchill, Britain’s Prime Minister during the challenging days of World War II understood this only too well - even during the darkest moments, he inspired so many others to keep going, saying: “Success is going from failure to failure, without losing enthusiasm.”

4. Get Your Hands Dirty

Every successful entrepreneur, particularly in the early startup phase, knows the importance of just getting stuck in, rolling up the sleeves, and getting the hard work done. In any startup business, entrepreneurs need to lead from the front, keeping on top of the business, whilst at the same time keeping an eye on how trends and markets may be shifting.

5. Put Together a Great Team

Successful entrepreneurs know the importance of surrounding themselves with a great team that has great future potential to grow with the business.  Therefore, take the time to choose your team wisely, as you need to have a team of people that are just as dedicated as you are to ensuring the success of the business going forward.

Adopting these five top habits will keep you in the right mind-set to stay focused and grow your business, particularly in the early startup days, ultimately helping you to realise your dream.  So, remember that even during the most challenging of times, keep going, keep chasing your dreams, and treat every moment and experience as a valuable one on your entrepreneurial journey. It is all a learning curve.
