Lioness Launch / Luxury jewellery meets conservation and sustainability in South Africa

Meet Helen Viljoen, a luxury jewellery brandbuilder with a cause.

When you set out to build a niche jewellery business, underpinned by an ethos of legacy building through sustainable luxury, there is a golden thread that runs through the company and the brand. In the case of Nebü, founded by South African entrepreneur Helen Viljoen, that thread is the creation of beautiful, sustainable jewellery with a cause and a commitment to environmental and wild life conservation.

Nebü is a sustainability and conservation-focused luxury jewellery brand - effectively, jewellery with a cause. What makes the brand different is that all the jewellery is crafted from pure, bullion grade, 24K gold - the first of its kind in Africa. In addition to its purity guarantee, Nebü also has a radically transparent pricing model - each item is sold by gram weight of gold plus a once-off manufacturing design fee. The brand’s commitment to purity and transparency ensures the intrinsic value of each piece, which is effectively a little piece of mobile investment, as well as a unique and bespoke immortal creation.

Speaking about the launch of this unique business, founder Helen Viljoen, said:

“The Nebü story is woven from African luxury, time-tested value and a passion for conservation, taking its clients on an opulent, golden Safari. In line with our ethos of building a legacy of sustainable luxury, our commitment to environmental and wild life conservation is the golden thread in everything that we do. At each stage of production, we consider the environment making us the sustainable African luxury brand of choice. All our gold is environmentally friendly, our manufacturing partners have social upliftment programs in place and 10% of all our profits are donated to conservation initiatives that are transparent and effective in their respective fields.

As a new business and brand, building awareness and visibility for Nebü has been key, and the company recently had a soft launch event in November of 2019, accompanied by the first soft product shoot dubbed ‘Golden African Treasures.’

Speaking about her aspirations for the business and the Nebü brand, Helen added:

“Being the first pure gold, sustainable luxury jewellery brand in Africa, we have huge aspirations for Nebü. We intend on growing our Earth Collection to include various African inspirations and expand our Wild Collection to include more endangered species. We are currently in discussions with some African luxury lodges whose brands synergize with ours and hope to build some collaborative relationships in 2020. Given the interest from abroad we would also like to expand our footprint globally.”

All Nebü pieces are made to order for now, currently offered through the brand’s e-commerce store www.nebugold.com.  The company offers free shipping to local South African clients and global customers can have their jewellery pieces shipped internationally through secure and insured logistics partners.
