Juvenália Brito, an Angolan entrepreneur building a professional make-up service

December 15, 2019 Melanie Hawken

When it comes to creating make-up for special events, television and photography shoots, it needs professional expertise. In Angola, a team of women experts in the specialist make-up industry have been brought together by Juvenália Brito, under the Juvenália Beauty brand, a business offering truly professional and beautiful make-overs.

LoA chatted to founder, Juvenália Brito, this month to find out more.

What does your company do?

We provide a professional make-up service for events, TV, photography, and others. We also offer training for those interested in learning how to apply make-up for personal or professional use.

“We provide a professional make-up service for events, TV, photography, and others.”

What inspired you to start your company?

In 2013, I discovered my passion for make-up. I had just finished my degree in civil engineering and had been looking for my first job. In the meantime, I discovered the world of YouTube videos and fell completely in love. I did, however, work as an oil and gas engineer for 2 years before deciding to leave my line of work and dedicate myself to make-up. Things in the oil field were not going so well and it was the push that I needed to get up, dedicate myself to my passion, and open my own make-up company.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

At Juvenália Beauty we work with passion and responsibility. We try our hardest to stay ahead of the game by adding innovative services like our retouch service for events, which helps keep everyone's makeup intact throughout the entire event. We also makeup sure that our artists are properly trained and receive a constant refresh on their knowledge.

Tell us a little about your team

So far, we are a team of 6 people, 4 of whom are makeup artists and 2 that help in other areas of the business. In the few years that Juvenália Beauty has been around, the team has gone through a few changes but is now stable and very dedicated. I have a team that is willing to do what is necessary and more in order for us to grow.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

There are very few people that I can actually draw from in the realm of entrepreneurship. Most of my older family members hold traditional jobs, especially those closest to me. I believe that entrepreneurship has grown more so in my generation here in Angola. We grew up with the idea that we had to either be doctors or engineers and that is what we worked towards. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the country has been going through great changes that have forced people to think outside the box and innovate in their ways of making a living. It has been quite an exciting journey and I can't wait to see what comes from it. I have learned so much about myself and my capabilities. I know today that I am capable of so much more than that which I learned in school or even working for others.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

In the future I would like to have my own make-up brand or at least collaborate with brands that already exist in creating more inclusive lines. I would also like to become a global reference for make-up, one that people all over the world can trust. The future is also in cleaner, more environmentally friendly products and services, so I would like to grow in that aspect as well. Creating not only products that perform well but that also do not harm the skin or our surroundings.

“I love the idea that I'm in control. I feel like I own my future and that nothing can take that away from me.”

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

I love the idea that I'm in control. I feel like I own my future and that nothing can take that away from me. That my dreams are sure realities as long as I keep working hard, and that didn't seem as evident before I became an entrepreneur.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

I would say to dream big! It's the funniest part. No one can say no to your dreams and aspirations, those are yours to keep and to make come to fruition. That and work really, really, really hard!
