Chika Madubuko, a Nigerian entrepreneur using technology to connect the elderly to professional caregivers

Getting access to qualified, experienced and fully vetted care for those elderly family members who wish to stay at home can be extremely challenging, but Greymate Care is one company looking to provide a solution. It’s online platform connects specialist carers to those in need of care, giving both patients and families the peace of mind they are looking for.

LoA found out more about this fascinating company providing care solutions to those who need them most.

What does your company do?

Greymate Care is the uber for home care. It is an online platform that connects the elderly to a vetted and insured caregiver/doctor/nurse at the click of a button. We take the stress of care off busy professionals using technology. Greymate Care not only solves the problem of finding a companion right in the comfort of one's home but we also have the potential of providing 10,000 jobs within Africa.

"Greymate Care was started as a result of a highly personal experience. We found it difficult to find someone to provide care during the last days of my diabetic grandmother."

What inspired you to start your company?

Greymate Care was started as a result of a highly personal experience. We found it difficult to find someone to provide care during the last days of my diabetic grandmother. At a point, we took turns in the family to spend time with her and this made our school work and jobs suffer. Even when we opted for a paid caregiver, there was no regulated marketplace and we were worried about the quality of the caregivers we found as none of them were background checked or trained. She eventually lived the rest of her life with less care and attention than she truly deserved. I decided to solve this problem for other families by getting some training in the UK and starting Greymate Care here in my country.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Greymate Care differentiates itself from other home care services due to our highly mechanised processes and equipment as opposed to the regular manual handling methods that are currently available. Our staff are background checked, trained and insured so our service users never have to worry about safety.

Tell us a little about your team

Greymate Care has three co-founders who are all women. Ogochukwu Obi (COO) is a registered nurse who handles all the health processes of the company. Remilekun Dosumu(CTO) constantly improves the technical skills of Greymate Care, eg. website, app development, etc. Chika Madubuko (CEO) is a trained caregiver and business professional and is the steady hands behind the smooth running of the business.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

I come from an entrepreneurial background and both parents of mine are entrepreneurs. I have successfully started an agricultural venture called Shefarms, where smallholder rural women are given access to market, input and advisory services on the best agricultural processes. I currently run this alongside Greymate Care.

"Greymate Care aims to partner with key firms within the health sector, expand to other African countries, as well as increase our service users to 35,000 by 2030."

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

We aim to partner with key firms within the health sector, expand to other African countries, as well as increase our service users to 35,000 by 2030.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

I love it when I see youths gainfully employed as a result of my company.

What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Just start. Start with what you have and work your way to the top.

Why LoA loves it….

Identifying a problem or challenge in society and then finding a solution is at the heart of many entrepreneurial stories, and for Chiko Madubuko, the problem was in finding specialist in-home care for elderly loved ones. Her inspiration for starting Greymate Care came from her highly personal experience of trying to find specialist care for her grandmother. Her specialist online platform is helping to connect specialist, fully vetted care professionals with elderly patients and families who need support, when they need it most.  --- Melanie Hawken, founder and editor-in-chief of Lionesses of Africa
