“Where do I start or how do I get from A – Z?” - these are the sorts of questions many entrepreneurs ask me when planning to start or grow their businesses. While many aspiring or established entrepreneurs may know their desired destination, finding the ideal path leading to that particular destination can pose a major challenge.
There are times when you know there is a need to reposition or package your business differently in order to appeal to a specific market segment, but the challenge is knowing where to start. You may have questions about resources or people you need, or new skills and work habits you may need to acquire, in order to get to the next level.
When in doubt what do people generally do? They find specific answers to their questions. The trick is to research various processes and systems available and then get advice; sometimes this advice may be offered for free but sometimes you have to be willing to pay for it in a form of coaching or consulting programmes. Consult with people who have already done what you want to do; get advice on what to do next; and get insights on the pitfalls to avoid. Bear in mind that they have been down that road before, so do not reinvent the wheel if it is not necessary.
Now, when you do find an opportunity to meet someone willing to give you advice for free, make sure you do not waste their valuable time. Talk less and ask more questions, remember you are on a fact or path-finding mission. Asking the right questions is critical because there are no right answers to wrong questions. So, ask open-ended questions that require more information, and open up a conversation instead of focusing on yes or no answers.
Here are some of the examples of questions you may ask?
- What obstacles did you encounter and how did you overcome them?
- What do you mean by…?
- Tell me more about…
- If I do this, what impact will it have on…?
- What do I need to do to move from point A to B?
- What else do I need to consider?
Often big dreams can be overwhelming hence it is important to break them down into small manageable chunks. Once you’ve determined the processes to follow or where to start, set measurable goals with specific deadlines, and then determine action steps you need to take to accomplish them.
