Africa has always had a vibrant design scene, but no more so than today, with a host of incredibly talented young women designers emerging from every corner of the continent. So, at Lionesses of Africa, we are declaring the month of February as Design Month, each day showcasing some of the finest design talent and telling their unique start-up stories.
Leading the way this Design Month are our featured Lionesses, all globally recognised African designers who are making their mark with their unique approach to design and some of the most wonderful pieces you could every hope to own. Take a look at the start-up story of Jenna Clifford, one of South Africa’s most successful jewellery designers and entrepreneurs; or Carrol Boyes, another South African and a truly unique creator of desirable homeware products utilising pewter amongst other inspirational materials; or Deola Sagoe, one of Nigeria’s finest and most successful haute couture fashion designers whose creations are truly beautiful and uniquely African; or Aissa Dione, Senegal’s inspirational revivalist of traditional fabric weaving who has single-handedly saved an industry in her country through her entrepreneurial approach. Each story is fascinating, heartwarming, truly inspirational, and a source of encouragement to other young would-be designers who are hoping to follow in their footsteps.
So, each day, be inspired and read the start-up stories of Africa’s greatest designers, from jewellers and crafters, couturiers and footwear creators, through to textile designers, interior designers and architects - stories from across the continent and representing all aspects of design. We will also be showcasing some of the up and coming young design talent, reporting on the latest news emerging from South Africa’s Design Indaba taking place this month, and interviewing some of the most inspirational names from the world of African design.
So, join us for our special Lionesses of Africa Focus on Design month, each day throughout February. This is a great time to share your suggestions with us as to the women designers in Africa who most inspire you - we will feature their stories throughout the month. Drop us a line here.
