Achieving more, faster and better, with less is crucial in today’s business environment. A business, regardless of size, has to be driven by efficiency and tangible results. Productivity is key for any successful business, particularly in Africa.
Business efficiency is generally measured through productivity and the business environment.
According to the 2015 Institute for Management Development (IMD) World Competitiveness Yearbook, South Africa’s overall competitiveness has dropped from 2014. This drop is attributed to the deteriorating performance in Government Efficiency and Business Efficiency.
The IMD further states that business efficiency requires high productivity in order to thrive and for the economy to be competitive.
Whilst it is important for South Africa, and the continent of Africa as a whole, to create an enabling environment to improve entrepreneurial performance; it is just as important for entrepreneurs to play their part as business owners by adopting a productivity mindset to alleviate the significant socio-economic challenges facing the continent.
With intensifying competition, increasing customer expectations, and declining resources, the survival of any business largely depends on improved productivity.
Factors contributing to productivity in your business include, but are not limited to:
- How you and your employees spend your time
- The work conditions and culture
- Structure and Processes
- Skills and competencies of your employees
- Use of Technology
- Motivation of your work force
Ensuring productivity in your business requires that you work smarter and schedule your priorities accordingly. As Peter Drucker, the founder of modern management and an inspirational author and writer puts it: “Nothing is less productive than to make more efficient what should not be done at all”.
